During a post-show interview after September 2021's PlayStation Showcase, Director Eric Williams divulged that God of War Ragnarök marks the end of Kratos' tussle with the Norse pantheon. The end of God of War III in 2010 saw Kratos seemingly die in the wake of killing the remaining Greek Gods. However, Santa Monica Studio's 2018 soft reboot begins with the character ending a different chapter of his life in another part of the world - Scandinavia.

Throughout God of War (2018) Kratos and his son, Atreus, come face-to-face with all manner of mythical Norse creatures. Naturally, the father and son duo encounter a fair few Norse Gods as well, including Freya, Magni, Modi, and Thor's half-brother, Baldur. The gameplay trailer for Ragnarok makes it abundantly clear that Kratos' and Atreus' run-ins with the otherworldly beings won't end there, either. But Ragnarok heralds more than the world's final stages, the catastrophic event will additionally put a pin in yet another chapter in Kratos' long-running story.

Director Eric Williams hinted at more of Ragnarok's story in a post-PlayStation Showcase interview with PlayStation Communications lead Sid Shuman. Williams divulged that, of course, Ragnarok itself will take place the new God of War installment, serving as a way for the development team to "cap off the Norse series." The Director further teased fans by quoting Kratos' final words in the original God of War Ragnarok teaser trailer - "prepare [yourselves]."

This debunks the theory that Santa Monica Studio had planned a Norse mythology-based trilogy. However, it does not mean Kratos' story is coming to an close in its entirety. What else the team may have in store for Kratos and Atreus post-Ragnarok currently remains a mystery, though.

Despite the rollout of gameplay footage and new story hints, the developer and Sony said nothing of a potential launch date for God of War Ragnarok. The trailer didn't even boast a 2022 release window tag at the end. But the excitement continued even after the showcase and interview segment, thanks to Art Director Raf Grassetti unveiling the first look at Santa Monica Studio's version of Thor. There's no word on when the crew plans on sharing additional details about the eagerly-awaited sequel.
