God of War Ragnarök is still potentially a ways off, but every mythological character and creature from its roster currently revealed has already amounted to a sizable cast. After the game's first reveal over a year ago with an expected 2021 release, the game's launch was pushed into 2022, with recent news confirming that Ragnarök's delay was in regards to cast health issues. There is still no smaller release window than sometime next year, but the most recent PlayStation Showcase at least gave waiting fans a new trailer, which teased some story elements as it introduced the large cast of characters.

Following the events of 2018's God of War soft reboot, the Nine Realms of ancient Scandinavia are on the doorstep of Ragnarök, the apocalyptic event that is foretold to bring about the death of the gods. According to prophecy, Ragnarök wasn't supposed to occur for centuries, but Kratos has a history of messing with the finely woven tapestries of fate. Now, Ragnarök is set to see Kratos and Atreus journeying to find Tyr, the Norse god of war, who may be able to aid them in an attempt to stop the coming disaster.

The first entry in God of War's Norse saga reinvented the series from top to bottom, and slowly - yet in predictably violent fashion - eased Kratos into the affairs of the Aesir and Vanir gods. Due to Kratos' knack for killing deities, Baldur, Modi, and Magni will most likely not reprise their roles in Ragnarök. There are still plenty of Norse pantheon members that will make an appearance, though, along with a host of side characters both new and returning.

God Of War Ragnarök Characters - Kratos & Atreus

Atreus arguing with Kratos in God of War Ragnarok.

Kratos, the second Greek god of war, and his son Atreus will reprise their roles as the two main protagonists in God of War Ragnarök. After exacting his revenge on the Gods of Olympus, Kratos retired for a hopefully quiet life in Midgard, where he fathered a son with the frost giant Faye, his second wife. The father/son duo's relationship is the center piece of the new Norse saga, and Atreus' status as a god was a particular point of contention in God of War. Kratos seems content to let the Aesir and Vanir deal with Ragnarök, but Atreus wishes to find a solution and is also seeking knowledge about Loki, his true, prophesied identity.

God Of War Ragnarök Characters - Mimir

Severed Head reading a book in God of War Ragnarok

Mimir is essentially the third protagonist in God of War, and will seemingly return in a similar capacity for Ragnarök. Mimir is the Norse god of knowledge and wisdom, and acts as a storyteller for much of the 2018 game. He is instrumental in Kratos and Atreus' journey due to his extensive knowledge of the peoples and history of the Nine Realms, and serves as the primary lore provider for the player. Though he once served Odin, God of War's severed head appears to have spent the entirety of Fimbulwinter - the protracted winter season before Ragnarök - with Kratos and Atreus after they freed him from Odin's imprisonment.

God Of War Ragnarök Characters - Freya

Freya attacking Kratos in god of war ragnarok.

Freya is, in many ways, a foil to Kratos. The Vanir goddess was formerly the queen of the Valkyries, is an ex-wife to Odin, mother to Baldur, and featured heavily in 2018's God of War. In the first game, she was primarily an ally, though Kratos' distrust of all deities made it an unstable relationship. Like Kratos, Freya too became an outcast, cursed by Odin to be trapped in Midgard after she ended their marriage. The thing most important to Freya is her son, Baldur, whose death at the hands of Kratos has incurred Freya's wrath, leading her to attack Kratos in Ragnarök's trailer.

God Of War Ragnarök Characters - Thor

Thor has barely been featured in God of War's Norse saga thus far, but is slated to be a primary foe in Ragnarök. The Norse god of thunder was seen in a prophetic dream of Atreus' at the very end of God of War, brandishing his famed hammer, Mjolnir. Thor is destined to clash with Jörmundandr, the World Serpent, during Ragnarök, but he will most likely be seeking revenge for the death of his sons Modi and Magni at the hands of Kratos and Atreus.

God Of War Ragnarök Characters - Tyr

Tyr standing in front of Kratos in God of War Ragnarok.

Tyr is God of War's other god of war. Per the newest Ragnarök trailer, Kratos seems to think Tyr might be able to help them. Mimir tells Kratos that Tyr is presumed dead, but he has actually been imprisoned by his father, Odin. The trailer shows Kratos and Atreus finding and freeing Tyr, but his disposition is as yet unknown, especially in regards to the death of his half-brother and nephews, Baldur, Modi, and Magni.

God Of War Ragnarök Characters - Odin

Odin himself hasn't been seen in God of War, just his ravens

The Allfather has yet to be seen in God of War - not even in a cameo capacity like his son, Thor. Odin keeps watch over the Nine Realms through his ravens, the destruction of which act as a side activity for the player in the 2018 game. Odin has yet to be confirmed for Ragnarök, but his appearance is highly expected due to the game ending God of War's Norse saga.

God Of War Ragnarök Characters - Jörmungandr

Jörmungandr helps build God of War's scale

Jömungandr is also known as the World Serpent, since he completely encircles Midgard by holding onto his own tail. In the previous game, Freya tells Kratos that Jörmungandr appeared suddenly in the Lake of the Nine, but the creature's ouroboros imagery goes further when Mimir says the World Serpent's foretold clash with Thor during Ragnarök will result in Yggdrasil, the World Tree, being splintered, sending Jömungandr back through time to the lake. Kratos' actions have disrupted the prophecies of the Nine Realms, as evidenced by the unexpected beginning of Ragnarök, so it's unclear how Jörmungandr's role will be resolved.

God Of War Ragnarök Characters - Angrboda

God Of War Ragnarok Angrboda

Angrboda, alongside Jömungandr, is one of the few remaining Giants in the Nine Realms. Appearing as a young girl, she was not present in the previous game, and only briefly appeared at the end of Ragnarök's trailer. Her role is almost entirely a mystery, and looking to her mythological inspiration doesn't offer many answers. According to Norse myth, Angrboda is a consort of Loki, and bears him three children: the great wolf Fenrir, Jömungandr, and Hel, the goddess of death. Though Fenrir has not yet appeared, Jörmungandr and Hel's domain of Helheim are both in God of War, and Atreus' true identity as Loki complicates predictions even further.

God Of War Ragnarök Characters - Brok & Sindri

Brok and Sindri return in God of War Ragnarök

The dwarven brothers are set to return in God of War Ragnarök, and will most likely fill a similar role in terms of gameplay. As masterful blacksmiths, Brok and Sindri were responsible for creating not only Kratos' Leviathan Axe, but also Thor's Mjolnir. In 2018's God of War, they act as the NPCs responsible for upgrading the player's equipment, and they appear to have a new smithy in the Ragnarök trailer.

God Of War Ragnarök Characters - Durlin

Durlin appears to be a new NPC in God of War Ragnarök

Durlin is an entirely new character coming to Ragnarök. He and his pet octopus only appear briefly in the latest trailer, and speculation points to him being a dwarf like Brok and Sindri. Durlin has no dialog in the trailer, and is not directly addressed, so his role in Ragnarök remains almost a complete mystery. Durlin joins the large cast of mythical character and creatures that are set to deliver on the promise of God of War Ragnarök being bigger and longer than its predecessor.
