In a recent tweet, God of War Ragnarök producer Cory Barlog hinted that he may already be playing the game on PS5, suggesting it could well be in a completed state and could meet its 2022 release window after all. The highly anticipated sequel to 2018's God of War by Santa Monica Studio has already been delayed once, and rumors have been circulating that it could happen again. There have been many speculations on when players can expect to see a release date for God of War Ragnarok, but no true news has been given.

In September of 2021 fans were treated to a teaser trailer of Kratos and Atreus in God of War Ragnarok. As expected, some time has passed since the first game's ending, and Atreus is older and much more disciplined than in the previous game. He wants to discover who he truly is and what being Loki really means, but Kratos is worried that a war between the gods will begin. One of the best parts of PS4's God of War was the growth in the characters and the mutual understanding that Kratos and Atreus had at the end of the game. There will be much to explore in this world and major world events have significantly delayed game development across the world, so when God of War Ragnarok was delayed from 2021 to 2022, many weren't surprised. With little news on the game since, it's not clear if it will be delayed again.

Recently, Cory Barlog, creative director at Santa Monica Studio and director of the first game, shared an image of a PS5 controller on Twitter that fans believe could mean he's currently playing God of War Ragnarok. Barlog's leading caption teased: "Steam Deck arrived…but probably won’t get to play it for a while because I’m currently playing this other thing…" While not outright stating he could be playing Ragnarok, Barlog has been known to tease fans on Twitter in the past, recently tweeting GIFs in reaction to a rumor that the sequel was still set to launch in 2022. As such, this latest tweet might be exactly what everyone is thinking it is - that Ragnarok is now in a playable state, and could release soon. Barlog worked as creative director on God of War Ragnarök for some time before passing the mantle to Eric Williams.

The amount of detail seen in the first game is an indicator of how the new God of War Ragnarok story will unfold. Digging more into Atreus' life, the story will likely be another emotional rollercoaster for players, and there is no telling what realms will be explored. There are going to be some familiar faces for sure, but even more new characters can be explored. Though God of War Ragnarok has been in development for some time now, there is no telling exactly how much is left of what still needs to be completed before fans can get to exploring the gorgeous and wielding Kratos' massive Leviathan axe again.

The potential that God of War Ragnarok is officially in a playable state is exciting news, though it's worth noting that Barlog has "trolled" his fans before, and this tweet could mean something entirely different to what fans assume. Despite both this and a lack of release date or even true timeframe for the game, this tease is one that God of War Ragnarök fans are very excited about.
