One God Of War fan recently pointed out a humorous similarity between Atreus and the MCU version of Loki, namely their go-to choice of weapon when facing off against a larger and more powerful foe. After traveling with his father Kratos across the realms of Nordic mythology throughout Sony Santa Monica’s 2018 God Of War reboot, Atreus makes a shocking discovery that changes the course of his destiny: his late mother Faye originally wished to name him Loki, meaning that he is the God Of War universe’s version of the infamous God of Mischief.

Meanwhile, Loki Laufeyson is more popular than he’s ever been, thanks in big part to Tom Hiddleston’s charming portrayal of the devious trickster god in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While both Marvel and God Of War have drawn heavily from the various figures of ancient Nordic mythology, the two franchises greatly differ in their portrayals of characters like Thor. However, Atreus and the MCU version of Loki are notably similar in many ways. Both share similar character flaws of arrogance and a violate temper, have a deep love for their deceased mothers and a strained relationship with their still-living fathers, and their storylines feature an adversarial relationship with their respective versions of Thor - though in MCU Loki's case things are much more personal since the God of Thunder is his adoptive brother. They also have a similar affinity for daggers when faced off against a physically stronger opponent, as one fan recently pointed out.

Just a couple of days ago, Reddit user agentofmidgard shared a humorous meme comparing Atreus and Loki (via Game Rant). Namely, the user points out that both versions of Loki tend to attack larger foes with a simple dagger, as shown when Atreus charges at Modi during Kratos’s boss battle against the son of Thor in God Of War (2018) and Loki attempts to stab Thanos with his own small blade at the beginning of Avengers: Infinity War. Agentofmidgard playfully suggests that “this kid should stop attacking bosses with knives,” since the approach doesn’t prove particularly helpful for either version of Loki.

This is far from the only time fans have compared the Norse characters of God Of War with their MCU counterparts, as a mock God Of War cover once replaced Kratos and Atreus with the Classic Loki and Kid Loki variants from last summer’s Loki series. Other pieces of fan art have pitted Kratos against the MCU’s version of Thor, even before it was officially confirmed that the Ghost Of Sparta will battle a far more villainous (and bulkier) take on the God of Thunder in the upcoming God Of War: Ragnarök.

Atreus has only recently begun to explore his nature as a god, and only time will tell if he assumes the same role as his classical counterpart or his Marvel iteration. In any case, it might do Atreus good to take agentofmidgard’s advice and not try to charge at Thor with a simple dagger once Kratos faces off against the Thunder God in the next God Of War game.
