Kratos has rarely been seen without his infamous Blades of Chaos throughout the God of War series, but God of War (2018) begins with the Blades no longer in the Spartan's possession. The Blades of Chaos are supposed to be bound to Kratos forever thanks to a deal he struck with Ares, the former Greek God of War in the series, long before the events of God of War (2018). For a large portion of the game, all players see are the bandages that cover the burn marks left by the chains when they were seared into Kratos' skin.

Although they aren't seen, the Blades of Chaos are still in Kratos' possession in 2018's God of War, buried beneath his home. The God of War buried his Blades of Chaos before the beginning of the game because Kratos didn't want Atreus to know about his blood-filled past, in which Kratos used the Blades of Chaos to kill his enemies and the innocent alike. He had planned to leave them buried for as long as he could, but his pending trip to Helheim forces him to retrieve the Blades once more.

As Atreus falls victim to a potentially fatal illness in God of War, Kratos brings Atreus to Freya to see if her magic can cure him. Kratos has kept Atreus' god status hidden from him, and the disease that Atreus has is only contracted when a god believes they are mortal. In order to make him well again, Freya asks the God of War to retrieve the bridge keeper's heart in Helheim. Helheim is a realm that is completely frozen over, rendering the Leviathan Axe useless, which is why Kratos has to retrieve the Blades of Chaos first.

After leaving Freya's home in God of War, players should return to Kratos' house by taking her boat from the river. Fortunately, Kratos will be able to float down the river in her canoe and straight to his home. Several hellwalkers will be outside Kratos' house, and all of them are immune to the Leviathan Axe. Kratos must defeat every hellwalker with his fists alone, then head inside to the animal rug to retrieve the Blades of Chaos.

Once Kratos has retrieved the Blades of Chaos in God of War, he can head back outside to use the Blades on the new hellwalkers that spawn. Kratos now has an alternative means to defeat these types of enemies without God of War's powerful Leviathan Axe, and the Blades of Chaos have the additional benefit of large area-of-effect attacks. Similar to the Leviathan Axe, the Blades of Chaos have Chaos Flames, Pommels, and their own skill trees that Kratos can use to improve his efficiency with God of War's most iconic weapon.
