God of War director Cory Barlog may like CD Projekt RED’s The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt better than his own game. Barlog has worked on most of the mainline entries in the God of War franchise, including 2018’s God of War, which saw a massive change in the long-running series with its shift from Greek to Norse mythology as well as the switch to over-the-shoulder, action-adventure style gameplay. The next entry in the series, which has been unofficially named God of War: Ragnarok, is rumored to be featured in next week’s PlayStation Showcase.

CD Projekt RED’s The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is considered by many as one of the best modern roleplaying games on the market. The game initially released on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One in 2015, and a Nintendo Switch version with adjusted graphics to compensate for the device’s hardware was released in 2019. The action RPG featured two expansion packs, Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine, which were also both critically acclaimed and contained enough content that they could rival other full games in playtime. The popularity and success of the game has led fans to not only continue modding it to this day but even create their own concept DLC for The Witcher 3.

Cory Barlog responded to a reply to one of his Tweets, the former claiming that The Witcher 3 is better than 2018’s God of War. Rather than defend his own game, Barlog surprisingly agreed with the Tweet, calling the action RPG masterpiece a “fucking brilliant” game. Barlog’s unexpected reply ostensibly surprised the Witcher 3 fan, who had almost expected to be blocked by the game director. The user followed up by saying that their Tweet was in jest, the upcoming God of War: Ragnarok is “gonna be awesome,” and that they were excited for it.

This isn’t the first time Barlog’s response to a fan’s Tweet has ended up on a surprisingly positive note. Last month, the director responded to a fan-made image comparing several screenshots from God of War and the Shrek movie series, implying similarities between the two. Barlog humorously responded to the image by jokingly confirming that God of War is just a ripoff of Shrek. Barlog even doubled down on his joke by saying that he actually pitched that God of War should be violent Norse retellings of both Small Wonder and Short Circuit 3.

In such a competitive market as the video game industry, it’s honestly surprising to see a game director even suggest that another game is better than their own. So whether or not the God of War director actually meant that with his reply, it’s still good to see both an honest response as well as one that actively praises a game from another studio.  It’s a great example of how developers, in spite of the nature of the market, are able to praise each other’s work, even in comparison to their own.
