There is great news for Sony's God of War as the latest installment becomes the highest rated PlayStation 4 exclusive of all time.

Swapping his signature Blades of Chaos for the mythical Leviathan Axe and the sunny shores of Greece for the cold climate of Midgard, Kratos is back for his eighth game. Bringing new character Atreus along as his son, "The Ghost of Sparta" finds a new lease of life in the franchise's soft reboot and long-awaited sequel to God of War III. With a whole new world to explore, it seems that God of War is all anyone is talking about right now.

According to Metacritic, God of War's 95/100 sees it take the crown as the next-gen console's best exclusive game. It is key to note that Rockstar's acclaimed Grand Theft Auto V is still ahead at 97 but is a multi-platform game. Elsewhere, God of War currently ties with the remastered version of PS3's The Last of Us and nudges ahead of its closest rivals like Persona 5Uncharted 4: A Thief's End, and Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom PainEither way, nothing should detract from God of War's amazing achievement in the gaming stakes.

God of War is out on April 20, but a slew of positive reviews (including our own) have already touted it as one to watch among this year's big gaming releases. Admittedly, review sites have a controversial reputation in movie and gaming circles, but Metacritic is on the money with God of War. With perfect scores from sites including IGN, Polygon, US Gamer, and GamesRadar+, God of War was always going to continue grabbing headlines ahead of its release. All of this together points to some major sales when players can finally get their hands on Kratos' next bloodthirsty adventure.

It has definitely been worth the wait to see Kratos flex his muscles once again, but the already overwhelming success of God of War is no surprise to some. With its crisp graphics and unique premise already sending fans into overdrive with the game's marketing material, the actual game is going above and beyond expectations. Another Norse mythology sequel is already being teased, with Sony's Santa Monica Studios already mapping out a bright future for the continuing series.

Given that God of War is only just behind Nintendo's acclaimed The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Sony will likely be over the moon with the news. While God of War is already being heralded as one of this generation's best games, let's not forget that the PS4 will also see exclusives like Insomniac's Spider-Man and The Last of Us Part 2 launch later this year. As Microsoft desperately tries to play catch up with its first-party games, there may not be any stopping Sony in 2018.
