The art director behind God of War has taken to Instagram to show off his modern redesigns of some of the Chrono Trigger characters. The original game released 25 years ago now, so seeing the characters rendered in 3D is a big change for fans of the series, even for those who seem to know everything about Chrono Trigger.

Out of all of the RPG games to ever release, Chrono Trigger still remains one of the most popular and most critically acclaimed. Players hop in the shoes of a young man named Crono who is tasked with teaming up a ragtag group of heroes as they attempt to save the world and return back to their original points in time. This story and its excellent gameplay has resonated with fans all around the world. The game is still so popular in fact that many fans are still hoping for a Chrono Trigger remake one day.

Raf Grassetti, the Art Director behind 2018's God of War, posted several pieces of his own personal artwork that show off what a modern version of Chrono Trigger would look like. The model for Crono in particular is incredibly well crafted and it shows off even little details like the stitching and wrinkles on his clothes. Grassetti has also put up character models for two other characters from the game as well, Frog and Robo, and he mentions that Frog is one of his favorites from the game.

Chrono Trigger characters reimagined

While Chrono Trigger may not have had the same amount of staying power as other popular JRPGs, there are many things that contributed to it popular as it is. Probably one of the biggest reasons is that it was designed by what Square referred to as the Dream team: Dragon Ball creator Akira Toriyama, Final Fantasy creator Hironobu Sakaguchi, and Dragon Quest creator Yuji Horii. While these three properties all went on to gain more money and widespread cultural prominence than Chrono Trigger, none of them have quite reached the same level of respect and reverence that Chrono Trigger inspires.

While Raf Grassetti isn't working on a remake or remaster of Chrono Trigger as far as anyone knows, it is very interesting to see what some of the characters might look like if a remake was in development. Maybe Grassetti's artwork will garner enough attention that Square Enix will finally get the hint.
