For any beginner, God of War is a challenging game and we're going to provide some tips and tricks to help you on your way. These tips and tricks will improve a beginner's gameplay and help to dominate even the hardest parts of the game.

Explore Everything Inside of God of War

God of War Snow Covered Giant

This might sound like old advice although nowhere is this tip more useful than in God Of War. Once you gain control of Kratos and you're following tracks with Atreus, there is a chest that if you didn't go exploring, you would miss. This is a common theme in God of War and needs to be relied on heavily. You will find magical items, Hacksilver (The game's currency) and other useful items where if you didn't go off the beaten path, you would miss totally and put yourself at a possible disadvantage later on. This also means that your map will be a huge resource where the summary of each area can act as a guidepost on what to do next.

Art Of The Kill in God of War

God of War Group Fight

Combat is no easy task in God of War and needs a lot of practice to perfect. The first encounter against enemies is a great place to learn the basics. The Leviathan Axe is your primary weapon and luckily enough you also have a shield to block enemies' attacks. The biggest key to fighting is to learn when to block/parry and when to move in for the strike. Pushing L1 will raise your shield for the block and if the timing is right you'll be able to parry the attack and counter with strong attacks. That parry has the advantage of stunning most enemies which will give you time to do loads of damage.  Don't be afraid of throwing Kratos' ax either as the hard throw using L2 to aim then R2 to throw will freeze the enemy giving you time to attack at will. These are two useful skills that will help even when going up against the super hard Valkyries. Another great technique that proves invaluable is rolling. A quick hit of the X button and you're quickly out of danger. Follow it up with a heavy attack and your enemies won't stand a chance.

Skills To Pay The Bills in God of War

God of War Skills Tree

With so many skills to pick from, which ones are the most useful? Which ones should a beginner go for first? The good news here is with more fights comes experience and that helps in knowing which to unlock first. A finishing move is typically a good choice as it can take off a very large amount of health. A great range skill is a great option as well as it can keep Kratos in relative safety for a few starting points in the game. Since you want to have your Leviathan Axe in your hands as much as possible to start (Seeing how it does more damage than your fists) then the Executioner's Cleave is a great skill to have in your arsenal sooner rather than later as the Draugr can easily succumb to its devastating power. Once combat becomes second nature, the experience will be piling up quickly to unlock the rest of the skills, but having that initial edge will make life easier to start.

Know Your Enemy Inside God of War

God of War Codex

The Codex is a great place to get information after encountering enemies. This is where methods of defeating them will come up once they've been encountered a few times. Check on it regularly to see what new information comes up. For example, from the beginning of the game, after the encounter with the Draugr in the area where the chain and gate puzzle appears, the codex will update saying that it's important to watch their movements and that dodging or blocking is recommended to get the jump on them.

Sons And Fathers in God of War

God of War Father Son Giant Fight

Kratos' son Atreus can play a very integral part in the game's combat and the fight against the game's first Troll is a great opportunity to understanding how Atreus can be useful. Granted in this first fight using him, his attacks are not that powerful. By keeping some distance, attacking when possible, using Atreus chips away at the Troll's health little by little in combination with Kratos' attacks. Keep this in mind for future fights as his skills can be upgraded to where he can have more powerful arrows and can use powerful spells.

Armor and Armor Accessories in God of War

God of War Armor Menus

God of War has a ton of upgrades especially when it comes to armor. As a beginner, stick to buying one piece of armor and upgrading it versus buying multiple armor pieces only to realize that the end game armor will require that hard-earned Hacksilver that went to simple common pieces. Resources in God of War are very valuable so make sure that the purchases being made will help in the long term. A good way to know what is useful is to see what extra bonuses come with the armor. Some sets will come with extras such as extra strength or vitality for example. Some will come with slots for gems which will come in handy to get extra bonuses. Slot in gems that will boost the stats that are lacking is a great way to balance out or putting everything into one stat can alter a play style. The beauty of it all is that it gives great possibilities to mix and match what can be done with armor.
