Yen Press has announced that Goblin Slayer Tabletop Roleplaying Game is being released in February 2022. Goblin Slayer started out as a light novel series, before being adapted into popular manga and anime series, transforming it into a multimedia franchise.
Goblin Slayer follows the titular warrior, who lives in a fantasy world inhabited by monsters and demihuman races. In most settings, goblins are low-level fodder that only exist to be killed for experience points. In Goblin Slayer, the goblins are cunning and resourceful, making them an incredibly deadly threat. Most adventurers in Goblin Slayer focus on fighting larger monsters and finding the most impressive treasure, while Goblin Slayer and his allies seek to destroy the goblins and the ones who control them, in order to protect the population from harm. Goblin Slayer is heavily inspired by tabletop games, with the light novels showing how dice rolls can be used to determine the fate of adventurers when rolled by the gods themselves.
Goblin Slayer is full of references to Dungeons & Dragons and The Lord of the Rings, with a fantasy world that has lots of room for the story to expand. Those who want to experience the Goblin Slayer world as a tabletop game will have their chance next year. The official Yen Press Twitter account has announced that Goblin Slayer Tabletop Roleplaying Game will be released in February 2022. The ad mentions that goblin slaying is part of the game, but that there are other adventures to be had in the setting.
The artwork used in the announcement is the same as the one for the Goblin Slayer TRPG from Japan, suggesting that it's an English localization of that game. It's unclear if Goblin Slayer Tabletop Roleplaying Game will come in a special box set like the Japanese game, which included character sheets, a battle map, and mini-figures, along with the rulebook. It's possible that the English localization is just a translation of the book itself.
For all its charms, Goblin Slayer is a controversial series, and it's unclear if the book deals with some of the darker concepts that appear in the story. There has been a big push for inclusivity in tabletop RPGs over the past few years, which includes laying out the groundwork for topics that players are comfortable or uncomfortable seeing in the game. If Goblin Slayer Tabletop Roleplaying Game is anything like the series it's based on, then that discussion will be even more important going in, as there are few series as dark as Goblin Slayer.
