A new trailer for the upcoming documentary A Glitch in the Matrix gives a haunting look at the theory that we are all living in a giant simulation. The title alludes to the Wachowskis’ popular Matrix franchise, which is perhaps the most significant cultural exploration of the trippy thought experiment. With The Matrix 4 on the horizon, public interest in the topic is likely nearing a new peak.

While The Matrix certainly didn’t create the idea of people living in a digital simulation, it’s arguably the concept’s best known and most popular instance. The notion of realities within realities has long been a staple of the science fiction genre, and recent shows like Westworld and Rick and Morty have put their own spin on the premise, often referencing The Matrix in the process. Over time, the concept of simulated living has expanded beyond the realm of sci-fi entertainment, sparking broader philosophical discussion.

That idea is now being explored in depth in the upcoming Magnolia Pictures documentary, A Glitch in the Matrix. A new trailer released by the studio shows off Rodney Asher’s (The Nightmare, Room 237) latest feature – a deep-dive into the theory that we are, all of us, living in a simulation. The film promises to explore origins of the concept in classical sci-fi, contemporary cultural implementation, science, philosophy, and conspiracy theories. With a promised interview pool of “a wide array of voices, expert and amateur alike,” it certainly looks to be an interesting dive into the (simulated?) world of philosophy and sci-fi. Watch the trailer below.

A Glitch in the Matrix, which is tapping into an audience with a widespread interest in its core conceit, is likely about to explode. While the original Matrix trilogy still holds a prestigious spot in contemporary pop culture, its immediate relevance has certainly diminished with time. However, that will probably change when The Matrix 4 premieres next year – simultaneously in theaters and for streaming on HBO Max. There’s no guarantee that the franchise’s return will make anywhere near the level of impact as the original film, but it’s still primed to be one of 2021’s biggest releases.

With that in mind, A Glitch in the Matrix should be an interesting lead-up when it releases next winter. With all the craziness and hardship the past year has brought, existential theories and abstract rabbit holes offer, at the very least, a fun and fascinating escape.
