Rian Johnson's murder-mystery film Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery officially enters Netflix's top 5 most popular films. A spiritual successor and standalone sequel to Johnson's 2018 film Knives Out, Glass Onion stars Daniel Craig as private detective Benoit Blanc, who sets out to solve a murder on the titular island. The film was released exclusively on Netflix, as Netflix purchased the rights to two Knives Out sequels in March 2021. Since its streaming release, Glass Onion has become a massive success, being nominated for two Golden Globe Awards and winning dozens of others.

Now, Glass Onion has entered Netflix's top 5 most popular movies of all time, based on the number of views from the film's first 28 days (via Netflix Top 10). Currently, Glass Onion is sitting at number 4 with over 273,200,000 views in the first 28 days, only trailing behind Bird Box, Don't Look Up, and Red Notice in the number 1 spot. The film beat out other massive Netflix hits, such as The Adam Project at number 6 and The Gray Man at number 5.

Everything We Know About Knives Out 3

With Glass Onion's massive success, and Netflix having purchased the rights to one more Knives Out sequel, there is no question that Knives Out 3 is happening. Johnson teased that the next addition to the Knives Out franchise will go in a "completely new direction tonally and thematically," and that the film has him "creatively jazzed." While there are no details as to the plot, the setting, or which Hollywood stars might appear, Craig is confirmed to return as Blanc.

Despite Blanc being one of the only returning characters, Johnson has already firmly denied the possibility of any Knives Out movies focused on Blanc as a character. Still, Glass Onion gave a glimpse into Blanc's private life, introducing Hugh Grant as Blanc's partner Phillip, but Johnson has said that he has no intention of exploring the private investigator's backstory. Johnson wants to focus on each film's mystery aspects, and exploring Blanc's history doesn't interest him very much. However, that doesn't mean there won't be any more tidbits of Blanc's personal life, as Johnson has said that "the detective is interesting in the way he serves his function within solving the mystery. And if we get glimpses beyond that, that’s great."

Will Knives Out 3 Get A Theatrical Release

Whereas Knives Out had a long theatrical release in 2018, Glass Onion was only in theaters for one week before being exclusively streamed on Netflix. Despite its limited release, Glass Onion did earn $13 million, which is a positive note for the sequel. Since this seemed to work in Netflix's favor, a theatrical release for Knives Out 3 is possible, as the first film in the franchise did, although there are no confirmations for such plans. A full theatrical release allows for widespread viewership, catering to non-Netflix subscribers, but even the streaming release has shown considerable success for Netflix. With the next Knives Out film currently in development, it's only a matter of time whether or not the Glass Onion sequel will perform as highly as its predecessors.
