I don't like giving speeches, they're my least favorite part of the movie because I don't like people clapping for me because everybody in this f——ng room has worked harder than me on this film. So I feel like a fraud standing here saying, you know, like I did something special. So thank you guys!

How Glass Onion Is A Fresh Change For Dave Bautista

Duke on his phone in Glass Onion

While not a stranger to more comedic-skewing projects, largely thanks to his acclaimed work in James Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy films, Bautista's work in Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery marks a nice change of pace for the former wrestler. Unlike the majority of his other projects, which tend to lean into his stature for his character's personality, Bautista's Twitch streamer and men's rights activist Duke Cody actually sees Bautista deeper tapping into his comedic chops for his frighteningly real character. As evidenced in Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery's key flashback sequence, Cody's stature and misogynistic beliefs are actually a mask for his insecurities, part of which can be seen in his introduction when he can't even overcome his mom's invasive presence.

One of the biggest, and more interesting, changes of pace for Bautista in Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery is the shocking reveal of his being the first onscreen death in the whodunnit sequel, killed by an allergic reaction to pineapple juice included in his cocktail. Though he has seen a number of demises in the past with the likes of The Man with the Iron Fists, Riddick and Spectre, his death in Johnson's film deals a far bigger impact on the story, finding his supporting characters distraught over his murder and a catalyst for the remainder of tension in the plot, much like his death in Blade Runner 2049. While some might have liked to see Bautista's Cody meet his end in a far more theatrical fashion, given his size and controversial ideals, it still proved the subversive kicking off point audiences have come to love and expect from Johnson.

What's Next For Bautista After Glass Onion

Dave Bautista in Knock at the Cabin

While Bautista will be returning to his more action-focused field with next year's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and Dune: Part Two, he is also diving into another unexpected genre with M. Night Shyamalan's psychological horror adaptation of Knock at the Cabin. Starring as the leader of a group of home invaders demanding a sacrifice from family of three to avert the apocalypse, Bautista looks to have found his most unique role to date as he works to convince a couple to go with the heart-wrenching plan to save the world, relying more on his wit and mental fortitude than simply his stature. Until Shyamalan's film hits theaters in February, audiences can catch up with Bautista's latest great performance with Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery now streaming on Netflix.
