GLAAD Honors the Best of Queer Comics

glaad comic stories nominated

The GLAAD organization annually honors the best of queer media, and comic books are no exception. It's no surprise to see a number of groundbreaking 2022 series and anthologies from DC and Marvel on this list, including the likes of Poison Ivy and New Mutants. Tim Drake - the third person to become Robin in DC Comics continuity - only came out as bisexual in late 2021, but the move from DC saw a resurgence of stories for the character, rightly honored here. Marvel's Immortal X-Men brought the longstanding love between Mystique and Destiny to the fore, exploring their centuries-long love story and positioning them as a pivotal force in the entire X-Men line.

It's also notable that a number of independent works are also being honored, such as Sins of the Black Flamingo and I Hate This Place, recognizing that the market for and availability of queer stories in comics continue to expand, even as some come under intense scrutiny and even bans. The 34th Annual GLAAD Media Awards will be held later this year, but readers can find these LGBTQ+ series, graphic novels, and anthologies from DC, Marvel, and more in stores now
