Lena Dunham recalls Adam Driver's first audition for Girls. The Kylo Ren actor starred in all six seasons of the HBO dramedy series as the on-again, off-again boyfriend, Adam Sackler, of struggling writer Hannah Horvath (Dunham). Executively produced by Judd Apatow, Girls is a semi-autobiographical series created and written by Dunham. The show's other titular girls include Hannah's best friend and roommate, Marnie (Allison Williams), their former college classmate Jessa (Jemima Kirke), and her cousin Shoshanna (Zosia Mamet).

Girls acted as an early breakthrough for Driver in his career, a role which he received three consecutive Primetime Emmy nominations for from 2013 to 2015. From there, Driver was cast as the sympathetic antagonist Ben Solo a.k.a. Kylo Ren in the Star Wars sequel trilogy, which launched his film career to new heights despite previously only starring in supporting roles in several Noah Baumbach films, Steven Spielberg’s Lincoln, and the Coen Brothers’ Inside Llewyn Davis. Driver's most recent film is Ridley Scott's House of Gucci in which he plays the head of the titular fashion house.

In a new profile from THR discussing her new Sundance film Sharp Stick, Dunham looked back on the audition that started it all for Driver. In the script, his character's appearance was described as "a golden-haired God" à la Friday Night Lights' Taylor Kitsch. While handsome and charismatic, Driver is a far cry from that description. Regardless, Driver gave an "astonishing" and "strange" audition, and Dunham saw something in him that told her he would be perfect for the part. Read how she described the audition below:

The part in the script was described like Taylor Kitsch, kind of a golden-haired God. And Adam is intensely striking and charismatic, but that’s not how you would describe him. He just gave the most astonishing, strange audition.

The character of Adam Sackler was only meant to be a first-season love interest for Dunham's Hannah. The rest is now history as Driver went on to become a permanent and beloved fixture of the show. At the time of the audition, Dunham likely had no idea she would play a role in catapulting the career of a future Star Wars villain and bonafide film star.

While Driver's time is now mostly occupied by film roles, as he has made three or more in each of the past few years, many fans would love to see him return to the role that started it all and even birthed the famous "Good Soup" meme. This recently became a possibility when Dunham revealed she has spoken to HBO about a potential Girls revival show. Only time will tell if the gang gets back together for a reunion.
