Girl in the Spider's Web Casts Blade Runner 2049 Actor

Sony's adaptation of the Swedish crime novel The Girl in the Spider's Web eyes Sylvia Hoeks to join Claire Foy as Camilla Salander.

Blade Runner 2049 Sylvia Hoeks

Sylvia Hoeks is in talks to join Sony’s adaptation of the Swedish crime novel The Girl in the Spider’s Web. Back in 2011, David Fincher directed the American adaptation of Stieg Larsson’s novel The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, with Rooney Mara as hacker Lisbeth Salander and Daniel Craig as journalist Mikael Blomkvist.

Although there were plans to adapt the next two novels in Larsson's trilogy, the studio finally decided to move forward with an adaptation of The Girl in the Spider’s Web, the fourth book of the series, written by David Lagercrantz. Sadly, neither Mara nor Craig will reprise their roles, with The Crown’s Claire Foy taking the role of Lisbeth Salander instead. Now, the studio is looking to bring Blade Runner’s Sylvia Hoeks on board in a key role.

According to Variety, Hoeks (Blade Runner 2049) is in talks to join Claire Foy in The Girl in the Spider’s Web as Salander’s estranged twin, Camilla. Unlike Lisbeth, Camilla is a sociopath who as a child delighted in the abuse of their mother and followed the criminal steps of their father. While mentioned on Larsson’s trilogy, Camilla makes her first appearance in Spider’s Web. The film will be directed by Fede Álvarez (Don’t Breathe) with a screenplay by Steven Knight, Jay Basu, and Álvarez, and is expected to begin production in January in Berlin and Stockholm.

Dragon Tattoo sequel The Girl in the Spider's Web moving forward

Hoeks is well-known in Europe but recently got her big break in Denis Villeneuve’s Blade Runner 2049, where she played the villainous replicant Luv. Among other recent works, she appeared in the French-German action war film Renegades, directed by Steven Quale and produced by Luc Besson, and the TV series Berlin Station.

The Girl in the Spider’s Web reunites Blomkvist and Salander after Blomkvist receives a phone call from a source who claims to have information vital to the United States. In need for a scoop for Millennium, Blomkvist turns to Salander for help. Little do they know, the secret they are going after is at the core of a web of spies, cybercriminals, and governments around the world. Spider’s Web will be the first in the series to be produced into an English-language film in its initial adaptation, as Larsson’s trilogy was first adapted to the big screen in Sweden, with Noomi Rapace as Salander and Michael Nyqvist as Blomkvist.

While Sony and Álvarez move forward with the casting and preparation for this film, fans of the series are not happy with the studio’s decision to bring on a new cast, plus the fact that they are skipping two books that serve as the base and core of Lagercrantz’ book. However, Álvarez and company could surprise the audience with a well-written script that will do justice to Larsson’s characters and also bring elements from the previous book so viewers won’t get lost in Salander and Blomkvist’s story.
