Girl Meets World Series Premiere

In the last few years, television has started reviving series that had previously ended. These sequel series or spinoffs are frequently about the next generation of characters, the children or proteges of the original series stars. One recent example has been the Disney Channel sitcom Girl Meets Worldwhich tells the story of Riley Matthew, daughter of Cory and Topanga from the 1990s series Boy Meets World. In Girl Meets World, Riley is making her way through middle and high school in New York City with her best friend, Maya Hart. Both confusing and helping things is the fact that her father Cory has been her history teacher. This tip of the hat to the original series (in which Cory lived next door to his teacher, Mr. Feeny) allows Cory to stay involved in his daughter's life and problems.

The show has enjoyed three seasons on Disney Channel, but there has been no word on a renewal for a fourth season. While this is not an official announcement, one of the show's actors and directors may have just spilled the beans.

Rider Strong played regular character Shawn Hunter on Boy Meets World and has continued the role in eight episodes of Girl Meets World. He has also directed 18 episodes. And in the latest episode of Literary Disco, a podcast hosted by Strong along with Julia Pistell and Tod Goldberg, he had something to say about the show's future, or lack thereof:

“We finished the third season of Girl Meets World — my brother and I were directing a lot of episodes and I acted in a couple — and the show ended.”

It should be noted, Disney Channel hasn't officially cancelled Girl Meets World. The actor could have meant that the third season ended. Or he may simply not be up to date on the latest news. But it is a pretty clear statement the show has completed its run. Additionally, it wouldn't be too out of the ordinary for Girl Meets World to end with its third season, as Disney Channel has a reputation for limiting its series to only a handful of seasons.

There is also the upcoming season 3 finale, which according to TVLine has more characters reuniting from Boy Meets World than ever before. Including Lindsay Ridgeway and Lily Nicksay, who both played Cory's little sister Morgan, with Ridgeway replacing Nicksay partway through the series. Whether they are sharing the role of Morgan or if there is something else happening with both actresses is currently unknown. It could be that both are playing new characters, or that one will play Morgan and one will play someone else. And just to make the future a touch more unsure, the episode title is "Girl Meets Goodbye".

All that said, the Twitter account for the Girl Meets World writers posted a response to Strong's comment: "There is no official word as yet. Disney's decision on season 4 coming soon. Officially, season 3 ends with 3 wonderful episode in January." So, maybe there's still hope for fans of the show.

Girl Meets World returns to Disney Channel with a one hour episode on January 6, 2017 at 6pm.
