From the very beginning of Gilmore Girls, fans knew that Rory had one big dream: getting accepted to Harvard. She had Harvard signs and other paraphernalia on her bedroom walls and the people in her life were definitely aware of this goal.

When Rory decided to go to Yale, her grandparents were incredibly thrilled, and it was surprising that she moved on from her original choice so quickly. There are some reasons why Rory becoming a Yale student makes a lot of sense, but there are some other signs that Harvard was always the right choice.

Harvard: Rory Dreamed Of This School Forever And It Was Always The Plan

Gilmore Girls fans know a few things about Rory Gilmore: she loves coffee like her mom, reading is her favorite hobby, and she always wanted to go to Harvard.

Since Rory's plan was always to attend this Ivy League, it seems strange that she would make a different decision. She was an organized person who liked lists and notebooks and knowing what to expect. There's also the fact that she was accepted into Harvard, so there was no real reason why she couldn't follow her original plan.

Yale: She Bonded With Richard Even More

Rory and Richard both enjoyed reading and once fans learned that Richard wanted Rory to go to his alma mater Yale, it seemed obvious that she might lean that way.

When Rory started exploring the idea of going to Yale, she and Richard deepened their bond, which was meaningful to both of them. Since Rory didn't have a present dad, it was nice for her to have Richard's influence in her life, and Richard felt so proud that his granddaughter was following his path.

Harvard: Rory Would Have Something That Was All Her Own

Richard did meddle a bit too much, as he was determined for Rory to choose Yale over Harvard, and while Rory seemed happy with her choice, some fans might feel that Richard overstepped his boundaries.

If Rory had chosen Harvard, she would have something that only belonged to her, and this would have been a positive thing. Instead of comparing her college experience to Richard's or even taking a class that he taught, she would have become more independent. The point of college is to separate from family and friends back home and experience growth, after all.

Yale: Rory Became Closer To Paris And They Had Fun Living Together

Paris and Rory lived together at Yale, and watching this friendship grow and develop more was definitely a highlight of Rory's time at the school.

This is one reason why it's a good thing that Rory chose Yale over Harvard. They had fun being roommates, and since Rory wasn't always comfortable around new people, this was made the transition from Stars Hollow to Yale a little easier.

Harvard: Rory Could Have Made More New Friends And Had More Experiences

Rory did become friends with Lucy, Olivia, and Marty at Yale, but since she lied to Lucy about knowing Marty, it didn't feel like the most positive or genuine situation.

If Rory had chosen to go to Harvard, she could have made a new group of friends whom she hung onto after her college graduation. She might have had more exciting experiences. She did become editor of the Yale Daily News, but if she was at Harvard and without the safety net of Paris, she might have forged greater connections with other people.

Yale: Rory And Logan's Relationship Was Significant

There are pros and cons to Rory and Logan's romance. He was wealthy and didn't plan for the future as she did, but they fell in love and sometimes opposites do attract.

Rory would never have met and fallen in love with Logan if she had gone to Harvard instead of Yale, and while she and Logan didn't stay together, it was still a significant and big relationship in her life. She became more comfortable in her own skin during this time and it's hard to imagine these characters not having an impact on each other.

Harvard: Rory Might Not Have Dropped Out

Rory stole a yacht and left Yale in season 5 of Gilmore Girls. It seems like if she had attended Harvard, then maybe she wouldn't have dropped out.

It was unexpected that Rory would want to leave school since she really loved to learn and she believed she would have a successful future. Rory's story could have gone differently because without Logan's influence, she would have likely finished out her time at college the way that she planned.

Yale: Rory Deviated From Her Strict Path A Bit, Which Is A Good Thing

Even though Rory changed her mind about what school she wanted to go to, her choice to attend Yale can be seen as a positive one.

Rory was always strict with herself, choosing to study rather than have a rich social life, and choosing Yale meant leaving behind the rigid path she had always followed. This is good because life isn't always straightforward or easy, and Rory showed growth when she was willing to make a change.

Harvard: Rory's Story Would Come Full Circle And Lorelai's Sacrifices Would Feel Worth It

While Rory still went to an amazing school and got an excellent education, she and her mom had a plan: Rory would study hard and do what she could to get into Harvard, and Lorelai would ask her parents for money to pay for Chilton.

If Rory went to Harvard, the show would have come full circle and it would have been wonderful, satisfying, and heartwarming to see Rory and Lorelai's shared dream become a reality.

Yale: Rory Was Close Enough To Stars Hollow To Balance Homesickness And Her New Life

Gilmore Girls-Rory and Marty's friendship

Stars Hollow is a confusing place but Rory and Lorelai couldn't have possibly loved living there more.

It was nice that Rory went to Yale because she wasn't too far away from Stars Hollow and since she was a bit homesick at first, this short distance helped her with the transition. While young adults are always eager to live on their own and experience what college has to offer, it's still a huge and scary change, and Rory had the best of both worlds here.
