"This town is like one big outpatient mental institution." Some of us saw this observation by Lorelai's ex Christopher as a good thing. Gilmore Girls began as a mother/daughter where-you-lead-I-will-follow story then turned into a we're-all-in-this-together ensemble piece because the denizens of Stars Hollow were just too over-the-top to ignore. Quirky, endearing, and compelling the townies offered something for everyone to relate to.

Think about who your fave character is; what drew you to him/her? Is the personality you're attracted to who you are or who you want to be? Your choice speaks volumes and perhaps reveals more about you than you ever realized.

Emily: You're Image Conscious

older woman in coral jacket; same woman in gardening clothes

"It's Mrs. Gilmore -- Mrs.! I am not a cosmo-woman." No, the long-married Gilmore matriarch is a Smith grad and high society doyenne who does charity work (when she's not shopping), is well-traveled (fluent in both French and Italian), and has a taste for life's finer things.

Appearances mean everything to Emily (Kelly Bishop) and so having a daughter who rejected the family's cafe society lifestyle embarrassed her, ergo Lorelai's teen pregnancy would make her look bad. This prompted the fast-talking brunette to leave home, furthering her mother to lose face and feel disappointed. As Emily says to Rory, "You can use your mother's old golf clubs. They're upstairs, gathering dust, with the rest of her potential."

Logan: You're A Risk-Taker

blonde guy in tux and casual clothes

"You have to tell me why we're committing a felony before we do it." The Huntzberger scion thought nothing of spilling his blue blood for the sake of a good caper, knowing that when, not if, he got caught, his newspaper magnate father's team of lawyers would bail him out.

He sank his dad's yacht off Fiji, flies scary little planes, and mistakes his reckless fun for having a zest for life, explaining to Rory: "Normal's Boring. Normal's overrated. Normal's not why you love me." Logan (Matt Czuchry) is also charming, smart, witty, romantic, and generous (he bought Rory a Birkin bag.)

Paris: You're An Overachiever

girl at podium; at table with coffee; in fencing outfit

"Who in the world deserves to go to Harvard more than me?!" There are Baby Boomers who have worked all their lives who do not have the packed CV that Paris (Liza Weil) had upon graduating from Chilton where she was both student council president and editor of the school paper, not to mention a volunteer at a hospital, a runaway shelter, and suicide hotline; she also led study groups and taught sign language. She speaks several languages, too.

Paris is not only driven but competitive, at first viewing her eventual best friend, the smart, affable Rory, as a rival. "Stay out of my way. I will make this school a living hell for you," morphed into, "You're gonna do such great things with your life, Rory."

Dean: You're Sincere

guy in leather jacket/in yellow hardhat

Dean (Jared Padalecki) is a natural mechanic, plays hockey for Stars Hollow High, likes to hang with the guys, and cares for his little sister Clara. He falls for Rory who outranks him intellectually and socially, and she returns his affection until she needs to be around people who are more stimulating.

So heartbroken, he impulsively marries schoolmate Lindsay but cheats on her with Rory who he is still in love with. The affair ends as does Dean's marriage. He eventually lets Rory go because he cares for her so deeply that he does not want to hold her back from the great things awaiting her.

Lane: You're A Free Spirit

Gilmore Girls Lane smiling on the left, drumming on the right

"Hey, I am a fanatic audiophile. That comes with responsibilities that a grounding doesn’t alter." Lane (Keiko Agena) will not be confined by her family's religious beliefs. She parlays her love of music into becoming a musician; a drummer to be exact.

She defies her mother and wears make-up and band shirts, buys CDs (remember those?) eats pizza, and eventually joins a band, which results in Mrs. Kim kicking her daughter out of the house. Lane moves into a house with her bandmates and waitresses at Luke's diner to pay the rent, determined to live her own life.

Jess: You're A Rebel

dark haired guy in gas attendant shirt, leather jacket, gray tee shirt

"Well geez, Ms. Gilmore, why would anyone not want to be in Stars Hollow? That just sounds plumb crazy." Sarcastic, troubled, and too cool for school (literally and figuratively), Luke's nephew fell hard for resident good girl Rory. She saw the good in him: a brilliant mind, quick-witted and like her, Jess (Milo Ventimiglia) had a love of literature.

With an absentee father and neglectful mother, Jess feels alone in the world and when he can't keep his distance from people, he lashes out at them. He's looking for love and connection and with encouragement from Luke who makes him quit Walmart, Jess moves to Philadelphia, joins a small publishing house, and writes a novel that gets published.

Sookie: You're Happy-Go-Lucky

woman in blue shirt and bandana; as bride with groom

"Hey! It's a party." She's a bubbly ball of fun and enthusiasm, (a bit accident-prone), and she cooks, too. Sookie (Melissa McCarthy) and Lorelai have an "opposites attract" relationship, making them great friends, co-workers, and eventually co-owners of The Dragonfly Inn.

Sookie is loving, but gets anxious and freaks out when problems arise. When she can open up to Lorelai and her husband Jackson, and her fears are eased, she's a delight to be around, loyal, and the person you can depend on to have your back.

Luke: You're Authentic

guy in grey shirt/then in row boat

"Lorelai, this thing we're doing here, me, you. I just wanted you to know I'm in, I am all in." The baseball cap-wearing diner owner is a small towner and unapologetic about it. He keeps to himself, and although he loves Stars Hollow - where he's lived all his life - he of the flannel shirts hardly ever participates in town events.

Scruffy Luke (Scott Patterson) is lovingly known as the town grump with a heart of gold. A man of few (sarcastic) words, he says what he means and means what he says. He's always there for Lorelai, was protective of Rory, was a dad to April who he found out existed when she was 12 and took in Jess because family helps family.

Rory: You're An Innocent

brunette in school uniform; same only older in black jacket pink shirt

"But...I've always done what was asked of me." Rory (Alexis Bledel) has always lived a rather sheltered life until Lorelai wanted her to go to Chilton, and to afford it she had to bring her parents into Rory's life. Even though the Yale grad's world expanded, via Emily's socialite lifestyle, her high school's rich kids, and all the Ivy League had to offer, she maintained her decency and guilelessness.

"I live in two worlds, one is a world of books." Her love of reading led to a love of writing and after graduation, she moved to Iowa to become a journalist and finally see the world on her own.

Lorelai: You Value Independence

Lorelai Gilmore in Gilmore Girls

"I need coffee, in an IV." It's the fuel that keeps her talking fast and moving through life at 90mph - whether to raise her daughter alone, start a business, or get in the business of friends and family to set them straight. Lorelai (Lauren Graham) has stood on her own two feet since she was 16 and it's her way or the highway.

Shunning her silver-spoon upbringing, Lorelai looks and acts like a teenager, has the wit of a standup comedian, never met a pop culture reference she didn't like (or use), and wields a don't mess with me attitude that protects herself and her daughter Rory.
