Stars Hollow is the peaceful abode of Rory and Lorelai Gilmore on Gilmore Girls. The Hollow is known for its coffee at Luke's Diner with a side of daily drama. Family, relationships, and town developments are part and parcel of an episode. Stars Hollow is just small enough to keep everyone close and just big enough to have a few secrets.

As much as fans love the hometown of their favorite New England characters, they can admit that not everything about the quaint dwelling makes sense.

Confusing Physical Location

Gilmore Girls super-fans know all about the series' inspiration. Eager viewers from everywhere have pilgrimaged to Connecticut to see the Mayflower Inn & Spa where Amy Sherman-Palladino once stayed. The lodging lies in Washington, Connecticut and is close to a neighboring small town, Washington Depot.

In the actual state, these towns are pretty far from bigger cities like Hartford and New Haven. Characters zip back and forth from town to town, but the real-life inspirations for Stars Hollow are easily an hour away.

Characters' Abilities To Afford Homes There

A town like Stars Hollow typically would not be so easy to live in. It doesn't seem like anyone in Stars Hollow is that well off, so it's strange that so many of them can afford homes.

Even renting in Connecticut is extremely expensive, not to mention the high cost of grocery shopping or eating out in such an area.

So Many Made-Up Festivals

Town festivals and events are fairly common, but Stars Hollow just has so many of them! Revolutionary War re-enactments, summer parties, movie nights, and even dance marathons all make sense.

Fans don't come across basket or firelight festivals every day, though. Even if some of the curated gatherings are a little strange, at least they give Stars Hollow character.

Not Enough Scenes At The Bookstore

For someone who loves books so much, Rory isn't really at Stars Hollow's bookstores that often. It's common for bookworms like her to spend hours perusing titles at new and used bookstores, especially charming local ones.

Fans see characters go to the Black-White-Red Bookstore for movie showings about as much as they see them actually looking for books to read.

Unclear Inspirations For Luke's & Weston's

Fans naturally want to know what aspects of Washington and Washington Depot inspired their favorite Stars Hollow joints. On a visit to the real-life towns, this author learned that Luke's is supposedly inspired by a coffee shop called Marty's.

However, Marty's isn't much like Luke's at all. Also, the potential Weston's counterpart is called The Pantry. It's a delightful haven for lunch or dessert, and it's full of unique wares and food products that guests can purchase. It's fun to research these things but also complicated when trying to compare an imagined world with a very real one.

Not Much To Pick From Beside The Diner

Stars Hollow has few choices for food establishments. Lorelai and Rory might be at Luke's or Weston's, but they're just as satisfied with ordering a pizza and pairing it with all their favorite candy from Doose's.

It's a little unusual for a sweet small town like Stars Hollow not to have a fine dining option. Maybe people like keeping things more casual, though.

No One Ever Sees Al's Pancake World

There's one other eatery, but it sends patrons away with a stomach ache. Al's Pancake World is the restaurant that is spoken of from time to time but never actually seen.

The menu is a hodgepodge of items from around the world, and Al doesn't necessarily excel at any of them. For all the folklore around Al's, it would be nice to see the place.

Gossipy Residents

Gossip is a vice that many know, and New England folks aren't immune to it. By the same token, some New Englanders keep their affairs more private and don't choose to talk about other people's business all the time.

This is a big problem for Babette and Patty, who can be seen openly sharing everyone's news at Luke's Diner. Stars Hollow is unique in its propensity for daily gossip.

Disorganized Town Meetings

Connecticut towns are known for their local governing structures, and town hall meetings are commonplace. It's hard to say what every town's agendas hold, but the Stars Hollow meetings come across as disorganized, and comically so.

Taylor Doose always has a new grand scheme up his sleeve, and people try to bring him back to reality, but it doesn't always work.

Where Does The Town Troubadour Go?

The Town Troubadour performing on Gilmore Girls

The Town Troubadour is the signature character enlivened by Grant-Lee Phillips' musical prowess. The Troubadour is seen on his little corner singing about all manner of experiences and emotions. He has to stake his claim when a competitor threatens to take over the job, but he sings from the heart and is a valued member of Stars Hollow.

The big question is, where does he go during all those times that he's not around? Perhaps he's hidden in a corner of Luke's, drinking coffee and gathering inspiration for songwriting.
