Fans are still reeling from Gilmore Girls' 2016 Netflix revival, Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life. Love it or hate it, the revival saw the much-anticipated return of showrunner Amy Sherman-Palladino and her husband Dan. The couple were not involved in Gilmore Girls season 7, and that's often cited as one of the main reasons fans hated it.

The Netflix revival came after Gilmore Girls was given a second lease of life on the streaming giant. Amy Sherman-Palladino and most of the core cast reunited at the ATX Television Festival in 2015, nine years after Gilmore Girls' final episode aired. The buzz around a potential Gilmore Girls comeback was palpable, so it came as no surprise when Netflix confirmed a revival a few months later.

And yet, once Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life hit Netflix, it was met with mixed reviews. Fans finally got to hear the famed final four words Sherman-Palladino had been holding onto all these years. The huge cliff-hanger might have harmed Rory's character development, but it certainly left the door open for more Gilmore Girls somewhere down the line. As Carole King would sing, where Gilmore Girls leads, fans will follow.

Gilmore Girls Hasn't Been Renewed (Yet)

There has been no official confirmation that a ninth season is in the works, either from Sherman-Palladino or Netflix. Sherman-Palladino has signed a multi-year deal with Amazon for The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, which may explain why another season of Gilmore Girls would be put in the back-burner. On top of that, some members of the cast have been outspoken on whether a second revival makes sense. But fear not, there's still hope for everyone's favourite mother/daughter duo. Sherman-Palladino's deal has a clause that allows her to work on a second Gilmore Girls revival with Netflix. And it's not like Lauren Graham and Alexis Bledel are against it - they just want to make sure it makes sense for their characters. Considering Rory is pregnant and we don't really know who the father is, the latter is certainly covered.

Gilmore Girls Season 9 Release Date

Milo Ventimiglia as Jess in Gilmore Girls

If Gilmore Girls season 9 is confirmed, it probably won't be released any time soon. The cast's schedules may be hard to co-ordinate, with Alexis Bledel likely busy with The Handmaid's Tale, Milo Ventimiglia working on more This Is Us and Melissa McCarthy being a big Hollywood star. It would also depend on the format the new season would take, whether it would be another set of 90-minute episodes organized around the seasons or a classic Gilmore Girls 22-episode run. Traditionally, Gilmore Girls always airs in fall or winter, so a potential season 9 could land in October 2021.

Of course, the major concern of Gilmore Girls season 9 would have to be Rory's pregnancy. Will Rory keep the baby? Who is the baby's father (and is it even possible it's anyone other than Logan?)? What will Rory's parenting style be like? Many questioned whether ending the revival with those four words was wise. It felt like Rory was following in her mother's footsteps (and so were Lane and Paris, for that matter) rather than crafting her own path. However, Gilmore Girls season 9 would allow Sherman-Palladino to explore this further, and maybe even give Rory a chance to forge a different future for herself.
