In 'I Get a Sidekick Out of You,' Lane Kim married Zack Van Gerbig in Gilmore Girls. This union closed the door on any opportunity of Lane dating anyone else from Stars Hollow, which made some fans uneasy. As sweet and caring as Zack was, a plethora of fans thought Lane deserved more.
Seeing how wholesome Brian was with Lane, the fictional possibility of these two getting together started flooding online forums like Reddit. What if Lane ended up with Brian instead of Zack? The two seemed to have more in common and a mutual understanding that she and Zack didn't have. But by the end of the series, one thing was made for certain: Lane deserved more.
Brian's Song For Lane
When Lane and Zack were dating, she was hoping that Zack would write a song for her just as he did for many of his other ladies in waiting. However, Zack didn't think the name "Lane" made for a good song title.
This bothered Lane, of course, but she didn't hold a grudge against Zack. Not long after their conversation, Brian told Lane that he wrote her a song and began playing it. The melody really did sound like Lane and she was finally happy.
He Was A Calming Force In Lane's Life
Compared to Zack, Brian was far more relaxed. While people say opposites attract, which is why Lane and Zack get along so well, those who have similar personalities also get along well.
At times, Zack acted childish and mindless but Brian was the equalizer; the one who calmed down situations before they escalated.
They Were Intelectual Equals
Not much is known about Brian's education or what school he went to, but he and Lane seemed to be on the same page in a lot of areas in life. Fans agreed that as nice as Zack was, he was oftentimes empty-headed and spacey. Brian is a guy that Lane didn't need to explain too much to because he already understood it.
Like when Hep Alien began rehearsing in Lorelai's garage and Zack had no idea what a bulwark was and Brian had to calmly explain it to him while Zack had a meltdown over the lyrics not making sense.
Mrs. Kim Might Have Liked Brian More
Mrs. Kim held high standards when it came to Lane's personal life. She had a long list of requirements Lane's potential boyfriend needed to have before they were even allowed to see each other. This slowly shifted when Mrs. Kim met Dave. With Dave, she let her guard down a bit.
But seeing as Dave and Brian are more similar than Dave and Zack, perhaps Mrs. Kim would have liked him with Lane more. In one scene, Mrs. Kim invited Hep Alien to perform at the house. And while they were eating Korean food, Brian fully embraced the culture, trying everything, He even learned a few Korean words to impress Lane's family.
Like Lane, He Too Loved Music
Lane has always been a music junkie and wanted a life revolving around rock 'n' roll. Her relatable dreams of traveling the world on tour changed when she got pregnant with twins, but her dreams wouldn't have had to change if she ended up with Brian. That's not to say that Lane wouldn't have gotten pregnant, but with Brian, she could have still done the whole music thing.
A Different Version Of Dave
A Gilmore Girls fan noted that Brian was just a "dorkier" version of Dave. Both were responsible and had a similar fashion sense. The only difference is that Brian appeared to be a hypochondriac with a few health ailments that he brought up on multiple occasions.
But seeing how in love Lane was with Dave (and going through a painful breakup), falling for Brian would have been the logical next step. Falling for someone like Zack was the complete opposite of Brian and Dave.
He Was Accommodating To Lane's Family
Zack was respectful of Lane's family and their traditions but he did it kicking and screaming. Impressing his girlfriend's family wasn't very "rock 'n' roll." Brian, on the other hand, went out of his way to impress Lane's family (especially when it came to Kyon).
When Mrs. Kim came to Lane's home for the evening, Lane prepped Brian and Zack so that the night went smoothly. And while Zack did a great job of following Lane's orders, there was something endearing about Brian offering her teas. Brian and Lane could have had an alternate ending that Lane deserved.
They Were Friends Fist
One of the best things for a relationship is when it starts with friendship. Lane and Brian were good friends from the start and genuinely had fun together.
Ironically, on Zack and Lane's first date at home, Brian came home early and jumped on the couch next to Lane. They had a comfortability with each other that would have worked well in a romantic relationship.
Brian Would Have Been A More Hands-On Dad
One of the sweetest moments between Brian and Lane is how he reacts to Lane's pregnancy, and later, motherhood. Brian panicked as a new father would when he found out Lane was pregnant.
And when the twins were born, Brian adapted to fatherhood by helping out wherever he could. From changing diapers to helping Lane with bags, Brian was all-in. It was a cute view of what Brian would have been like as a dad.
