Gilmore Girls has many beloved characters, and while Rory (Alexis Bledel) and Lorelai Gilmore (Lauren Graham) are at the core of the story, Lorelai's best friend Sookie St. James is also super popular. Melissa McCarthy played this part with perfect comedic timing and a lot of wit and heart, and she could always be counted on for some hilarious and quirky moments.

Even though fans have always enjoyed seeing these two characters on screen together, when their relationship is analyzed a bit more, it seems like they aren't really that perfect. Read on to find out ten reasons why Lorelai and Sookie aren't real friends on Gilmore Girls.

Lorelai Is Mean About Sookie Being Single

In the first season of Gilmore Girls, Lorelai says something truly mean to Sookie: "When did you become a relationship expert? You haven't been in a relationship in years." She then says, "Wow... zero to jack*** in 3.2 seconds."

Sookie and Lorelai seem like they're such good friends that this is a strange conversation to think about, but it just goes to show that there are some cracks in their so-called great friendship. How could someone really say that to their best friend? Lorelai has had her periods of being single, not to mention the fact that her love life hasn't exactly been perfect. This must have really hurt Sookie's feelings.

They Fight When They Can't Buy The Inn That They Want To

Ever since the beginning of Gilmore Girls, fans know that Lorelai and Sookie want to go into business together. They want to open their own inn with Lorelai managing and Sookie running the kitchen. It seems perfect.

But when their plan hits some obstacles, they have a massive fight, and that seems like an immature way to handle it. This happens in the second season episode "The Ins and Outs Of Inns." Fran doesn't want to sell them the inn and so Lorelai tells Sookie that their inn will never be a success. It's weird that Lorelai would flip out like this and that she would take it out on Sookie instead of trying to see if they could find another property.

Lorelai Often Acts Like Sookie's Personality Is A Problem

Sookie would be an amazing friend as she's quirky, funny, and tries to brighten everyone's mood (especially by cooking and baking). But Lorelai doesn't always seem to appreciate her, and she often acts like Sookie's personality is a problem.

For instance, when they aren't sure which property they can buy in order to open their own inn, Lorelai seems to think that Sookie doesn't care enough about it and isn't getting upset enough. Lorelai should understand that Sookie deals with things in her own way and that her optimistic personality is a strength, not a weakness.

Lorelai Gets Moody When She's Supposed To Be Doing Sookie A Favor

Lorelai has her selfish moments and this is especially obvious in the first season episode "Double Date." She knows that Sookie and Jackson (Jackson Douglas) like each other and that they need a bit of help in order to go on their first date.

Sure, Lorelai agrees to go on a double date but she is a real jerk the whole time. She can't stand Jackson's cousin Rune (Max Perlich) but instead of being a mature adult and just grinning and bearing it, she's clearly in a terrible mood the whole evening. She's supposed to be doing her best friend a favor, so why can't she just deal with it?

They're Not Always There For Each Other

Aren't best friends always there for each other, especially when something important is going on? That definitely should be the case, but it isn't always so with Lorelai and Sookie. In the fourth season episode "The Incredible Sinking Lorelais," Sookie is supposed to be at the Dragonfly Inn so she can see a sink get delivered.

Sookie doesn't do this, which leads to an argument between her and Lorelai. It seems like if they were real pals, Sookie would never have let that go and she would have taken it more seriously. Sookie should have realized that this would have stressed Lorelai out.

Sookie Never Told Lorelai About Luke's Ex Rachel

When Rachel (Lisa Ann Hadley) comes back to Stars Hollow in the first season, and it becomes clear that literally everyone in town knows who she is except Lorelai. When Lorelai learns that Rachel and Luke (Scott Patterson) were super serious about each other, a question comes up: why didn't Sookie ever tell Lorelai about Rachel?

It seems like if they were truly best friends, they would talk about everything, and this would have come up in conversation. It also seems like Sookie would know that Lorelai and Luke are secretly (or maybe not so secretly) in love and that this would be important information for Lorelai to have.

Lorelai Doesn't Seem To Be Super Involved In Sookie's Life

Sookie goes through a lot on Gilmore Girls, from falling in love and marrying Jackson to moving in together to having children. But it never really seems like Lorelai is super involved in Sookie's life.

While Sookie and Rory seem pretty close and Sookie is there for Lorelai, fans don't see Lorelai doing a ton for Sookie. Sure, she can't cook or bake like Sookie can, but couldn't she seem a bit more compassionate about the struggles that Sookie faces throughout the show?

Lorelai Doesn't Really Confide In Sookie About Her Feelings

It's a shock to fans when Lorelai doesn't go through with her wedding to Max (Scott Cohen). It's an even bigger shock when she demands that Rory drop everything and go on a road trip with her in the now famous and beloved season two episode "The Road To Harvard."

But Lorelai never let Sookie in about the feelings and thoughts that she was having about this. She just calls Sookie from the car and lets her know that she won't be at work for a little while. What? Wouldn't it be weird to receive this kind of call from your so-called best friend? Real friends talk about everything and anything.

Sookie Seems Nervous To Give Lorelai Her Opinion

Another reason why Sookie and Lorelai don't seem like real friends is that while Lorelai is always very chatty and energetic, Sookie sometimes seems nervous to give Lorelai her opinion.

For example, in the first season, Sookie says that Lorelai wanted Luke to come over because she likes him. Lorelai denies it and Sookie says, "No, honey, I'm sorry. I don't want you to be mad. Don't be mad at me." Lorelai says, "I'm not mad, I'm not mad, I'm tired." Sookie says "Luke is a really nice man" and Lorelai says "Bye, Sookie." A best friend shouldn't get mad when their friend is giving them their opinion or telling them the way that they see things.

Sookie Abandons Lorelai And Their Dream Of Running Their Own Inn Together

Fans were relieved that Melissa McCarthy would be returning to Gilmore Girls for the Netflix revival, but fans were definitely surprised when Sookie wasn't in very much of it. As it turned out, Sookie had left because she wanted to pursue her culinary dreams.

But if Lorelai and Sookie were real friends, why would Sookie be so cool with abandoning Lorelai and their dream of having their own inn together? They were supposed to run it together, and that was the plan. It just seems like she would care more about Lorelai's feelings instead of just running off to do what she wanted. This seems like a huge lack of communication, so even though this friendship seems like a strong one, when fans peel back the layers, Lorelai and Sookie might not be real friends after all.
