Rory and Lorelai Gilmore from Gilmore Girls were surrounded by all sorts of friendly faces throughout the seasons. From the quirky and lovable Stars Hollow residents to privileged people who came from old money, they mingled with all walks of life. While some were made of best friend material, others had a tendency to control and manipulate everybody around them.

Just like in the real world, nobody is perfect in Gilmore Girls. Even the most likable characters falter and make horrible life choices. The characters that would best be avoided aren't those who struggle with responsibility sometimes. It's those who treat others poorly or don't have the capacity to form loving, honest relationships.

Befriend: Rory

While Rory certainly wasn't the best at making sound life decisions, she was a nice presence in the lives of people she met. Hard-working, smart, and introverted, Rory was easy to get along with.

Even though she had self-destructive tendencies and struggled with a lot of pressure, she didn't take her frustrations out on other people. Additionally, her privilege, natural beauty, and intelligence could've turned her into a pretentious snob like Logan, but she never let those things get into her head.

Avoid: Emily

Many fans enjoyed Emily Gilmore as a character because she was the queen of shady burns and backhanded compliments. And while she could be hilarious at times, she could be outright cruel and offensive as well - especially to her staff!

Emily constantly meddled in her daughter's life and believed she knew best for every other family member as well. While there's no doubt she cared deeply about those close to her, she lacked the warmth and flexibility that is needed for forming healthy relationships.

Befriend: Luke

His exterior is not all that friendly, but deep down, Luke was one of the nicest guys on Gilmore Girls. From giving Kirk insightful life advice to taking care of Lorelai after Richard's heart attack, he was somebody everybody could trust and rely upon.

Luke always seemed to be grumpy, but he was also selfless, protective of those he loved, and incredibly loyal. Additionally, as the owner of Luke's Diner, he always had a pot of coffee or a bite to eat ready to go. Who wouldn't want to be friends with a guy like that?

Avoid: Dean

Dean Forester, Rory's first boyfriend, might have come across as grounded and calm to strangers, but those who got to know him better found out that he was actually really possessive, controlling, and needy. When things didn't go his way with Rory, he'd withdraw affection from her to punish her and throw a temper tantrum.

By the end of the show, Dean seemed really bitter and disappointed about life in general. While his heart was always in the right place, fans agree that he's not the type of person who'd make for an amazing friend.

Befriend: Lorelai

Warm, bubbly, and talkative, Lorelai was a great presence in everybody's life, despite her occasional selfish streak. The relationship she had with Sookie is a living testament that Lorelai knew how to show up for her friends. From encouraging Sookie to ask Jackson out in season 1 to supporting her culinary dreams, Lorelai always looked out for her bestie.

While some fans think that she wasn't that great of a mother or a partner, there is no doubt that this cheerful lady made for an awesome, laid-back friend.

Avoid: Logan

Logan Huntzberger was one of the least likable characters on Gilmore Girls. As soon as Rory met him, her life spiraled out of control. He was mean to people who weren't as privileged as him, like Jess and Marty, for example, and he never took care of those he supposedly cared about.

When Rory dropped out of Yale, he didn't encourage her to get her life back on track. Quite on the contrary: he only used Rory to appease his own ego, like the time he unexpectedly proposed to her at her graduation party. He always wanted to be the center of attention and caused trouble anywhere he went.

Befriend: Paris

When Paris first started spending time with Rory in high school, she could be really cruel and didn't make for that great of a friend. But as time went on, she really grew into her own.

Many characters were developmentally stuck and struggled to take responsibility for their own lives, but not Paris. She wasn't as approachable as Lorelai or Rory, but she was loyal, reliable, and strong: the ideal support system.

Avoid: Kirk

The quirky Kirk is one of those side characters that breathe life into Gilmore Girls. And while fans absolutely adore him, most wouldn't want to be friends with him in real life.

After all, Kirk never takes 'no' for an answer and acts like a child more often than not.

Befriend: Sookie

Sookie is like a ray of sunshine. She's funny, kind, and loyal to her friends. While she definitely has a perfectionist streak in the kitchen, she's not as strict with those she loves.

Sookie also tends to worry a bit too much, but that just goes to show how much she cares about her friends and family.

Avoid: Richard

Richard gives his tearful vows in Gilmore Girls

Richard had a tendency to prioritize business over his own family. Most of his relationships were transactional; he only spent time with people who belonged to his social class and was therefore out of touch with reality. Additionally, he was really disrespectful to Emily. When he got upset, he dropped his elegant act and showed his true, controlling colors.

When Emily stood up for herself and told him she's going to Europe to have a great time, he told her that "only prostitutes have two glasses of wine at lunch". What an insensitive man!
