The fictional Connecticut setting of Gilmore Girls may look flawless, but its inhabitants--albeit fun (Miss Patty), quirky (Kirk), and incredibly enthusiastic, though sometimes a bit meddlesome (Taylor Doose)--are not always perfect idyllic. While they might be down to earth for television, when it comes down to it they're just a regular group of people who are doing their best, but who also make mistakes.

The bottom line is they all are genuinely good-hearted, which is why it is so easy for fans to overlook it when they aren't their best.

Lane Kim - Best: Free-Spirited / Worst: Sneaky

girl playing drums; in yellow t-shirt

Best: Free-Spirited--Lane (Keiko Agena) was not just an audiophile, but a drummer as well. She had quite the collection of rock CDs (remember those?) and never met a band t-shirt she didn't like. Lane always followed her heart and passions.

Worst: Sneaky--Honestly, what choice did she have? Lane couldn't be herself in her own home, or even outside of it because her mother, Mrs. Kim, didn't approve of contemporary fun activities, so she had no choice but to hide herself. Still, sneakiness can go too far sometimes, and it doesn't always lead to the best outcomes.

Emily Gilmore - Best: Dignified / Worst: Controlling

woman in green; standing with man in suit

Best: Dignified--Emily (Kelly Bishop) is the ultimate society doyenne with high standards. She has excellent taste and always carries herself with the utmost aplomb. There are few characters as dignified as Emily Gilmore.

Worst: Controlling--There is a reason that Lorelai rebels so much against her mother and resents her in many ways. Emily is incredibly straightlaced and controlling. She always wants everything to be exactly as she thinks it should be.

Logan Huntzberger - Best: Charming / Worst: Irresponsible

guy in gray shirt; same in black with brown background

Best: Charming--As the scion of an old-money family, Logan (Matt Czuchry) can work a room like a politician using his killer smile, flirtatiousness, and wit to put everyone at ease, making each guest feel as though they're the only ones in the room. This was meant to serve him well in business when he took over the Huntzberger empire.

Worst: Irresponsible -- Even with all the opportunities afforded him, Logan resents the preordained life his rather snobby and cold parents have set up for him and rebels by engaging in reckless fun that often has an edge of darkness to it, indulging behavior that gets him into trouble.

Jess Mariano - Best: Sensitivity / Worst: Cynicism

guy in moto jacket; in blue jacket reading

Best: Sensitivity--He reads poetry and Jane Austin, and he writes. Luke's nephew Jess (Milo Ventimiglia) has the soul of an artist and found his twin flame in Rory. When they're together he drops the leather jacket, James Dean-tough guy act and shares his love of literature and gentler side.

Worst: Cynicism--Jess is troubled because of various problems in his home and family life. When his mother ships him off to live with Luke, he doesn't fit in with Stars Hollow, and its cheery ways. He is lonely and afraid, as well as lost, and lashes out to test people. His cynicism sometimes prevents him from seeing how things around him could improve.

Dean Forester - Best: Protective / Worst: Reactive

guy in black leather jacket; in store apron

Best: Protective--Dean (Jared Padalecki) was the self-appointed bodyguard of his younger sister Clara, and even after he and Rory were no more--and he was dating Lindsay--he still looked after her. While they were together, he always wanted what was best for Rory as well.

Worst: Reactive--Dean could sometimes shift moods at the drop of a hat, and wasn't always great about keeping his emotions in check. After Dean ran into Rory at a party, he witnessed her run out of the house crying with Jess in tow. Even though Dean was there with his new partner, Lindsay, his connection to Rory was still so strong that he physically attacked Jess, and their confrontation, which began inside the house, spilled out onto the lawn, where they had to be broken up by the police. During his time dating Rory, Dean also sometimes reacted without thinking when they disagreed or he felt insulted in some way.

Paris Geller - Best: Born Leader / Worst: Overly Competitive

girl in school uniform; same only older in pink sweater

Best: Born Leader--At Chilton, Paris (Liza Weil) was editor of the school paper and student body president, with a long list of extracurriculars such as Habitat for Humanity on her jam-packed CV. She is driven, ambitious, and brutally honest. Paris was born to rule the world.

Worst: Overly Competitive--Paris's inability to settle for anything less than being number one makes her so super competitive that she saw everyone as the enemy, which was detrimental to her relationships and herself. Paris could sometimes focus so hard on something that she forgot almost anything else, which included other people's emotions and her own well-being. Although her initial dealings with Rory were rocky because Paris could only see her as someone to compete with, the young Gilmore's kindness eventually got Paris to let her guard down and they not only became friends but roommates at Yale.

Sookie St. James - Best: Enthusiastic / Overreactive

woman in blue shirt; same in plaid blanket with drink

Best: Enthusiastic--Sookie (Melissa McCarthy) has a natural effervescence that drives her to be an optimistic friend, creative chef, and loving, understanding mother. Her excitement, especially when making great feasts, can cause her to be a bit accident-prone, but her passion for life keeps her going.

Worst: Overreactive-- Sometimes Sookie's enthusiasm could go too far, and, at times where a clear-head would have been more helpful, she instead panics and makes things worse.

Luke Danes - Best: Authentic / Worst: Humorless

guy in plaid shirt holding flower; same leaning on counter

Best: Authentic--Luke (Scott Patterson) is the definition of what you see is what you get. The lifelong Stars Hollow resident is small town and likes it that way, hence the reason he rejected an offer from Lorelai's dad to open a chain of Luke's Diners. He has a heart of gold, fixing things for Lorelai without being asked.

Worst: Humorless--Known around as the town grump, Luke refuses to participate in Town Meetings or their War Re-enactments, even though he loves where he lives. When he deals with people, he does so with sarcasm and a dry wit.

Rory Gilmore - Best: Good-Natured / Worst: Stubborn

girl in school uniform; same only older in pink shirt

Best: Good-Natured--Friendly and sweet, Rory (Alexis Bledel) is always there for her friends and family. She has one of the kindest hearts in the show, and always strives to be the best friend, daughter, and person she can be for herself and those she loves.

Worst: Stubborn--Although Rory, most-often, doesn't love to participate in too much drama, she can get very stubborn sometimes. When her mind is set on something, she is loathe to change it. On the occasions where she does end up fighting with those close to her, she is known to dig her heels in.

Lorelai Gilmore - Best: Independent / Worst: Immature

woman in black and in gray hoodie

Best: Independent--16 and pregnant Lorelai (Lauren Graham) struck out on her own and never looked back. She took a job as a hotel maid, with baby Rory in tow. She worked her way up to manager then true to her entrepreneurial spirit, she opened her own inn.

Worst: Immature--Her eating habits are the stuff of which junk food stomach aches are made. The single mother may be sharp as a tack, but often her humor is juvenile. And although her ex, Max Medina, referred to her as a "wordsmith," sometimes her love of words goes too far, as she talks a mile a minute yet doesn't always listen.
