In the sixth season of Gilmore Girls, Luke was thrown through a loop when he found out he had a daughter he didn't know about. April Nardini was a smart and youthful 12-year-old who sought after her dad for the name of science. Ever since meeting April, Luke followed his heart and tried to be in her life as much as she allowed. The only thing in his way was April's mother and his ex-girlfriend, Anna Nardini.

Anna has done some pretty atrocious things to Luke as soon as he found out about their child. And the absolute worse thing about Anna is that she only became worse. She became an instant villain in the series who made plenty of mistakes without acknowledging them.

She Never Told Luke He Had A Daughter

Let's start with the biggest glaring mistake in the series: Anna became pregnant with April and she never told Luke. Her reason? He didn't seem like a "kid" guy. As much as Anna would hate hearing this, that's not much of an excuse. According to all of Stars Hollow, Luke is a standup man who is loyal to a fault. As soon as he knew he had a child on the way, he would have done the responsible thing and took charge as a dad in her life. Instead, Anna hid her child from Luke and never intended on telling him about her.

She Encouraged Luke's Involvement (And Then Changed Her Mind)

Things started out well between Anna and Luke at first. Luke was freaked out by the entire situation, of course, but once he came around to the notion of having a daughter, he wanted to make up for lost time. Anna was shocked Luke wanted to be apart of April's life and encouraged it.

She didn't stop him from making plans with April. But it looks like as soon as April and Luke became closer, Anna retreated. She regretted letting Luke into their lives and began fighting with him whenever he wanted to see her. For Luke, it was fair to play around with his emotions.

She Told Off Lorelai

In the episode "Super Cool Party People," Lorelai stopped by Anna's shop to introduce herself and to clear the air surrounding April's birthday party. It's obvious the writers were attempting a juxtaposition between Lorelai and Anna being single mothers to daughters but it ended coldly.

Anna should have met Lorelai as soon as Luke wanted April in his life. Anna should have judged Lorelai herself instead of pushing her away. Lorelai tried to apologize and comfort Anna, letting her know she wasn't going to be a flake in April's life. Anna, however, treated Lorelai like she wasn't permanent. She was only temporary. Anna told Lorelai that being engaged didn't mean they were married and that she didn't want Lorelai anywhere near April until then.

She Moved April To New Mexico

In the seventh season, Anna told Luke that her mother wasn't doing well down in New Mexico and that she was going to move there to be closer to her. Instead of talking this massive life decision over with April and Luke, Anna made the decision herself.

April cried to Luke. She didn't want to leave school early, she just made a group of friends, and she didn't want to live in the desert. "Mom is ruining my life," April said to Luke. As a concerned father, Luke gave options to Anna so that April could at least finish the school year but Anna didn't want to hear any of it. She had made up her mind.

It Was Up To April To Find Luke

If it wasn't for April's curious mind and love for science, who's to say that Anna would have ever told Luke about their child? The only reason Luke knew that April existed is because she wanted to know who her father was and thought it could have been a cool science experiment. What's sad is Anna most likely gave April three men's names for her project (as seen on April's science board). Did this mean Anna wasn't 100% sure that Luke was the dad? Or did she give April random names for the sake of her project? It doesn't add up nor does it make sense. Nevertheless, April finding Luke was in her hands.

Anna's Twisted Joke

In "The Perfect Dress," Luke had just found out about April and wanted to know more about her 12 years of life. Luke read April's blog in awe. There were so many things he missed in her life.

He called Anna after reading her blog and demanded to know a few major things that April wrote about. And in a sickening attempt at being hilarious, she made a cruel joke to Luke over the phone that was uncalled for. After Luke said, "I mean, there's no one else running around with my nose," Anna replied "...That you know of." She's the one who kept April from Luke and now she's making a joke of it.

Anna Didn't Want Lorelai Around April

Lorelai is an amazing mother. She was able to raise Rory and give her a life that isn't always possible for single moms. It's a bonus that Lorelai and Rory are closer than close. Everyone in Stars Hollow knows how great of a mother Lorelai is to Rory. Anna, of course, didn't know anything about Lorelai and was tortured when she found out she had a big part in April's birthday. She showed up at the diner and screamed at Luke for including a "stranger." What's even sadder is that she made Luke feel like he did a poor job.

She Scolded Luke For Allowing April To Stay With Him For Spring Break

When Anna made the lone decision to move her and April to New Mexico, Luke tried to think of ways to stay involved in April's life. He suggested that April stay with him to finish the school year while Anna got settled in their new home but Anna shut that down before Luke could even finish his sentence. And when Luke suggested April staying with him for spring break or even a few weeks in the summer, Anna flipped her lid. She told Luke he had no right in making promises to "her" kid. She was essentially telling Luke that she and April were never coming back.

Anna Withheld April From Luke After An Argument

After Luke was scolded by Anna for wanting to spend spring breaks and summers with their daughter, Anna did the worse thing possible: she withheld April from Luke. (Not even Lorelai did that when things were weird between her and Christopher.) April was supposed to meet Luke at the diner but when she never showed up, he became worried. He called Anna to let her know that April wasn't there and that's when Anna told him that April wasn't going to go. At this point, Anna went too far and Luke had no choice but to take her to court.

She Didn't Think Luke Had A Chance

Between moving their daughter to another state, keeping their daughter from him, and telling him what he could and couldn't do, Luke took Anna to court. He wasn't going to walk all over him anymore. She's the one who kept April from him for 12+ years. She's the one who was making decisions for April without including him. And she's the one who was making Luke look like a deadbeat dad when the reality is that she never told him! She even told Luke that he didn't have a chance in winning because she and April had a connection. The courtroom was hard but Luke came out victorious. He was awarded with joint custody.
