HBO reveals the first teaser trailer for the upcoming historical series The Gilded Age. The highly anticipated Downton Abbey spinoff suffered several delays. Originally under development at NBC in 2018, the show moved to HBO in mid-2019 with the intention to begin production in 2020. After the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic filming for the project eventually moved into 2021, with hopes to debut in 2022.

In a new teaser trailer shared by HBO, fans are treated to a first look at 1880s New York City. “Power belongs to old New York,” declares the old money socialite Agnes van Rhijn. “Not the new. Never the new,” she adds. Introducing her young and penniless niece, Marian Brook, it appears that not everyone is convinced by her words. Providing brief glimpses of ballroom romances and the approaching modern age, Agnes’ sister Ada Brook suggests, “It’s not quite as simple as that.” Undeterred and resolute, Agnes replies: “Yes it is.” Check out the full trailer below:

Created by Downton Abbey mastermind, Julian Fellowes, The Gilded Age serves as a prequel, focusing on an earlier era to its Britain-centric counterpart. Louisa Jacobson stars as Marian, a character who inadvertently finds herself in the centre of an Old Money vs New Money dispute between her aunt Agnes (Christine Baranski) and their new neighbours, George and Bertha Russell (Morgan Spector and Carrie Coon). Others joining the social and economic fray include Cynthia Nixon as Ada Brook, Denee Benton as Peggy Scott, Taissa Farmiga as Gladys Russell, Simon Jones as Bannister, Harry Richardson as Larry Russell, Blake Ritson as Oscar van Rhijn, and Thomas Cocquerel as Tom Raikes. The Gilded Age premieres on January 24, 2022.
