In the wake of an explosive seventh episode, The Gifted teases the introduction of the original Von Strucker twins in a new trailer for the next episode, 'threat of eXtinction'. The freshman Marvel show is off to a strong start with competitive ratings and incredibly engaging storylines. Recently, however, the show has begun to add a bit of mystery, from Roderick Campbell's plans to the true nature of Andy and Lauren Strucker's abilities and just what might be in store for the teens in their tumultuous life with the mutant underground.
That path seems to be leading them straight to the Von Struckers. Originally characters from the opposite side of the MCU tying into Baron Von Strucker and Hydra, Andreas and Andrea Von Strucker were villains who wholeheartedly supported Von Strucker and Hydra's cause. Ruthless and terrifying, the pair became international terrorists and tormented everyone from the X-Men to the brotherhood. The mutant pair have been confirmed to appear on The Gifted and thanks to Doctor Campbell's interest in them, it seems as though the Von Struckers might appear in a far more direct way, influencing the lives of Reed and Caitlin's children.

In this new promo for episode 8, 'threat of eXtinction', Reed tells Blair Redford's Thunderbird that it's crucial they visit his father. His father relates the family's history as well as warning his son about his children. Reed shares what they can do and the audience is reminded of just how much damage Andy and Lauren have directly and indirectly caused and created. Upon hearing this, Reed's father warns him to protect them and protect the world from them.
The overwhelming evidence seems to point to Reed's grandparents being the Von Strucker siblings who have somehow gone into hiding and raised a non-mutant son making them a part of the show's growing mythos and deepening mystery. The promo ends with the children holding hands, just like Fenris did in the comics before unleashing their most terrifying abilities.
The choice to include the original Von Struckers is a bold one, potentially destroying any positive development for the characters. Andy, in particular, stands to do the most damage if he learns that he's the grandson of what amounts to a supervillain team, not to mention the other problems that come with the Von Strucker family history. It's a terrifying addition to the characters in the mutant underground that fans have grown to love.
That precisely is just what The Gifted is about, however, and it's past time for the show to add even more extraordinary into the down to earth, street-level mutants that we've seen. Whatever is coming for Lauren and Andy Strucker, the next generation of Fenris, with incredible writing and a great cast they'll clearly be able to pull it off.
