Two new trailers for FOX's The Gifted highlight both sides of the upcoming mutant civil war, which will be a big part of season 2. The Mutant Underground and the Inner Circle will clash over the fight for mutantkind.

Last season, a member of the Inner Circle of the Hellfire Club, Esme (Skyler Samuels), infiltrated the Mutant Underground and manipulated key members of the group. Unlike the Underground, Esme had no intention of fighting for peace between mutants and humans. Instead, Esme made problems worse by committing more acts of violence. Esme and her sisters also succeeded in tearing apart the Underground by recruiting Polaris (Emma Dumont), Andy (Percy Hynes White), and more.

FOX has released two separate trailers for the Mutant Underground and the Inner Circle. Each trailer focuses on character from their respective factions. The Underground trailer shows Thunderbird (Blair Redford), Marcos (Sean Teale), and others discussing how to handle the threat posed by the Inner Circle, while the Inner Circle trailer is shown from the opposite perspective. Both trailers include characters who may be the Morlocks from X-Men comics, mutants who are so different from humans that they live underground, away from humanity. The Morlocks were confirmed to appear during The Gifted's panel at SDCC 2018.

It remains to be seen how the Morlocks will factor into the growing conflict between the Underground and the Inner Circle, led by the new villain, Grace Byers' Reeva. In trailers for the new season, Reeva has demonstrated a willingness to do whatever it takes to achieve her goals, even if it includes killing other mutants. Reeva doesn't "believe in the failed dream of the X-Men" and plans on leading a revolution. Time will tell if Polaris and Andy will remain with the Inner Circle, or if Reeva's methods will drive them away. Neither may be interested in causing harm to the members of the Underground.

While season 1 dealt primarily with the Undeground fighting Sentinel Services, the Inner Circle appears to be the main antagonists of season 2. It's unclear how the mutant civil war will play out over the course of the season, or which side will prove victorious. There's a good chance that the fallout from the war will result in even more hostilities between mutants and humans. Either way, season 2 promises plenty of dark days ahead for mutantkind.
