The protagonist of The Gifted, Reed Strucker (Stephen Moyer), will gain a mutant ability when the show returns for season 2. Reed and his wife, Caitlin, spent season 1 trying to protect their mutant children, while also being the Mutant Underground's only human allies. Now Reed too will know what it feels like to be a mutant.

After learning of his father's research into mutant DNA, Reed discovered that his children's powers ran in the family. They were connected to the von Strucker twins, two powerful characters from the comic books. In the show, the Strucker twins are notorious killers who combine their powers for destructive purposes. Apparently, Reed was a mutant too, until his father found a way to suppress his X-gene, which kept him from developing powers.

In an interview with TV Guide, Stephen Moyer and showrunner Matt Nix reveal that Reed will finally have powers of his own in season 2. Moyer says that Reed's journey of discovering his abilities will begin when he decides to investigate his past and his father's notes. Moyer says the powers are "in the family" but doesn't reveal the specifics, or if they have any connection to the powers of the original Strucker twins. Nix explains that Reed's long-suppressed abilities can be "very, very bad news."

So when they come along, it's a rough ride. It's a very, very rough ride. It's not like he's suddenly a super hero. And one of the things we think about a lot is how are these powers hooked into someone's emotional life, and Reed's a pretty repressed guy. So powers showing up for Reed is not good news. It's very, very bad news.

Both in the comics and in the movies, situations where mutants access their powers for the first time have a history of ending badly. Often, these events lead to tragedy. It all depends on the nature of the power. Andy, for example, unintentionally wrecked his school after being bullied. Reed could cause a similar - if not worse - catastrophe with his abilities.

Fans caught a glimpse of Reed's new discovery in a recent promo for season 2, where he's seen looking down at the veins in his hand which seem to be pulsating with red energy. It's unclear what will cause Reed's powers to manifest after all this time.

Reed's metamorphosis could have an effect on his role in the Mutant Underground. Some of the mutants were unwilling to trust him at first, but his new powers will make him one of them. If he becomes as powerful as his children or his grandparents, Reed could prove to be instrumental in the fight against the Hellfire Club.
