The Gifted Trailer Teases Mutant Underground vs. Hellfire Club

A new promo for season 2 of The Gifted teases a war between the Mutant Underground and the Hellfire Club. Season 1 ended with the Underground being fractured by ideological differences, causing some of their most important members—particularly Polaris (Emma Dumont)—to switch sides.

Season 1 of FOX's X-Men spinoff The Gifted introduced viewers to the Mutant Underground, a large group of mutants fighting for their lives against Sentinel Services, a government funded organization tasked with hunting down mutants. Toward the end of the season, a new threat was discovered in the form of the Hellfire Club, who are more interested in provoking violence than achieving peace between mutants and humans. In the season 1 finale, the Hellfire Club succeeded in recruiting several members of the Underground, which proved to be a major blow to their cause.

FOX's new promo for season 2 shows the Hellfire Club plotting to "change the world". The Hellfire Club recognizes the Underground as one of their enemies, as they "still believe in the failed dream of the X-Men". The trailer also highlights one of the season's new characters, Reeva, played by Empire's Grace Byers. Reeva appears to be either a high-ranking member or possibly even the leader of the Hellfire Club, which means that she could serve as the main antagonist of the season.

Reeva was mentioned in the SDCC 2018 trailer for season 2. She was described as a powerful mutant who took over the Inner Circle of the Hellfire Club. Reeva will kill anyone who attempts to leave the organization, which will make it difficult for Polaris or Andy (Percy Hynes White) to change their minds and rejoin the Underground. It remains to be seen what Polaris or Andy will be willing to do for their new masters, or if they have any hope of redemption in the near future.

With season 1 being about mutants fighting humans, season 2 is setting up a civil war between two factions of mutants, while also introducing a third faction: the Morlocks. In the comic books, the Morlocks are a group of mutants who live underground because their appearances stand out so much that they are unable to blend in with humans. It's unclear what role the Morlocks will play in the conflict between the Underground and the Hellfire Club. They could be allies to the Underground, or a neutral party who would rather keep to themselves.
