Spoilers follow for episode 10 of The Gifted
The winter finale of The Gifted, "eXploited", saw the shocking death of of a member of the Mutant Underground. Last week's episode saw Lauren (Natalie Alyn Lind) and Andy (Percy Hynes White) Strucker, Clarice/Blink (Jamie Chung), and Sonya/Dreamer (Elena Satine) captured by Sentinel Services after attempting to free the other mutants trapped inside. They were then transferred to the care of Dr. Roderick Campbell (Garret Dillahunt), who has an interest in the mutant siblings and their connection to their great grandfather and his sister- otherwise known as Fenris.
When Andreas (Paul Cooper) and Andrea (Caitlin Mehner) Von Strucker held hands they unleashed a terrible power which they used for evil purposes. Lauren and Andy have this same power, including the ability to see as one and unleash destruction so strong they have not been able to use this powers to its full extent yet. The Strucker family is still reeling from this revelation, especially the fact that Reed (Stephen Moyer) is actually a mutant himself, but had his powers "cured" by his own father, Otto (Raymond J. Barry).

In an attempt to force Lauren and Andy to use their powers, Campbell threatens Blink and Dreamer. When the siblings don't comply, the doctor shoots and kills Dreamer. While Jace Turner (Coby Bell) has proved he is a character who can be reasoned with, Campbell is not the same. He is ruthless in his pursuit to cure all mutants- but what that means yet is uncertain. Somehow his plan involves measuring the abilities of Lauren and Andy, at any cost.
After watching their friend die, the Strucker siblings have no choice but to comply by holding hands and unleashing their powers. They are so strong they destroy the adamantium cell where they are held- no easy feat considering it's the stuff that makes up both Wolverine's claws and Captain America's shield and is supposedly virtually indestructible.
The end of the episode saw another botched rescue mission, with the members of the Mutant Underground still in the dark about the fate of their fellow mutants inside Trask Industries. With all the fighting lately about the best course of action, Dreamer's death could be the best way to unite the group again. However, they first have to deal with Esme and her betrayal. After killing all the Sentinel Service agents it doesn't seem like she's a Hound, but working on a different agenda all her own. And now that Esme is reunited with her other two Cuckoo siblings she's more dangerous than ever.
Besides Esme and Dr. Campbell, the mutants may also have to look out for Agent Turner again. Turner agrees to help save Lauren, Andy, and the other mutants, but is met by Esme and her mind control at the end of the episode. Dreamer isn't the only character who dies in this episode, Agent Weeks (Joe Nemmers) shoots himself under Esme's orders as Turner watches helplessly. Any shred of humanity he might have felt for the mutants is now gone as he has seen first hand (and more than once) how dangerous mutants can be.
The Gifted returns on January 1, 2018 at 9 PM on Fox.
