You can't keep a good Joe down for long, so plans for G.I. Joe 3 are already in the works with a proposed story that will see Roadblock (Dwayne Johnson) play a more central role. The threequel has seen a number of writers and potential directors come and go, but D.J. Caruso (I Am Number Four) is currently set to direct.
Franchise mainstay Cobra Commander is still on the loose; and when he was still attached to the project, director Jon M. Chu said that the new story would feature a mix of characters both familiar and new, with the possibility for characters to come back from the dead as well. Now a new casting report points to three new characters from the toy line who are apparently set to join the big screen G.I. Joe universe.
According to Film Divider's studio sources, identical Corsican twins Tomax and Xamot are going to be the new bad guys in G.I. Joe 3. The former mercenaries are now merchant bankers who run Cobra's corporate front, Extensive Enterprises, and also lead the Crimson Guard. They have an empathic bond that allows them to feel each other's pain and communicate without talking, and they are almost perfect mirror images of one another (Xamot is the one with the scar).
There are three immediately obvious ways that this casting could go: one actor for both twins, with a little help from some composite imagery and body double trickery; two actors who aren't identical twins but who look can close enough after going through hair and make-up transformations; or an actual set of identical twins. The potential casting choices for the last option are obviously limited, but there are a few identical twins in Hollywood, including Teen Wolf stars Charlie and Max Carver, and the somewhat better known Shawn Ashmore (X-Men: Days of Future Past) and Aaron Ashmore (Smallville).
The other new character who will reportedly feature in the movie is M.A.S.K. (Mobile Armored Strike Kommand) leader Matt Trakker, whose task force used specially equipped masks to help them combat the none-too-subtly named bad guy team V.E.N.O.M. (Vicious Evil Network of Mayhem). It's possible that Trakker's involvement means that both M.A.S.K. and V.E.N.O.M. will be on the scene in G.I. Joe 3, but he could also start out as part of the main team and perhaps splinter off to form his own group in future sequels.
From what we've been able to find out this report seems pretty solid, so look forward to possibly hearing casting news for Tomax, Xamot and Matt Trakker in the not-too-distant future.
