Since Sony announced Paul Feig (Bridesmaids, The Heat) would be directing the studio’s Ghostbusters reboot with an all-female cast, many began speculating on who might star in the new take on the beloved film. Feig is also penning the script for the “hard reboot” with previous collaborator Katie Dippold (The Heat), and many of the actresses speculated to appear include those that the director has worked with in the past. Original Ghostbusters star Bill Murray even tossed in his two cents, naming Melissa McCarthy (St. Vincent), Kristen Wiig (Bridesmaids), and Emma Stone (The Amazing Spider-Man 2) as actresses he’d like to see in the reboot.
Another actress that fans have suggested would be a good addition to Feig’s Ghostbusters is Rebel Wilson, who worked with the director on Bridesmaids. While promoting her newest film, Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb, Wilson revealed she has met with Feig for the Ghostbusters reboot.
In an interview on The Today Show, Wilson explained she had a meeting with Feig about appearing in Ghostbusters. However, the script for the reboot is still in the works and will need to be completed before real talks begin. The actress did say, though, that she would appear in the film even if the “money truck” doesn’t come with it - a reference to an earlier question in the conversation about appearing in future Night at the Museum films.
Read Wilson’s full quote:
"Look, I have had a meeting, but who knows. They have to look at the script when it's finished…I would do that even without the money truck because ‘Ghostbusters,’ the giant marshmallow man if that’s going to be in it...yeah, I’d do that for free. I probably shouldn’t say that on TV.”
Though Feig’s feature film directing credits are slim, he has already become well known for working with the same actresses on multiple projects. McCarthy, for instance, has appeared in Bridesmaids, The Heat, and Feig’s next film, Spy. Rose Byrne also returned to work with Feig on Spy after her role in Bridesmaids.
So while no one has officially been cast in Feig’s Ghostbusters reboot, it appears he is gauging the interest of actresses he would like to work with (again). Of the comedians Feig has previously worked with, Wilson seems an obvious choice for the film because she has become even more well known for her comedic talents since her role in Bridesmaids and she fits in well with the director’s humor.
However, though it may seem like Feig is interested in casting Wilson in his Ghostbusters film, it’s still far from set in stone. With so much speculation surrounding Wilson and McCarthy especially - in addition to other actresses throwing their own names into the pool of prospects - it may be difficult to tell what is and isn’t confirmed until an official cast is announced.
