The Ghostbusters theme got mixed with the Beastie Boys, and it actually makes the song even better. The title tune from the 1984 Ivan Reitman film starring Bill Murray, Harold Ramis, Dan Aykroyd, Sigourney Weaver, and Ernie Hudson is one of the most beloved and recognizable in American cinematic history. Originally written and performed by Ray Parker Jr., it is so iconic that only a song of near equal measure, like Intergalactic, off the Beastie Boys 1998 album, Hello Nasty, could be paired with it and do it any justice.

YouTuber William Maranci is the musical architect that dared assemble the Ghostbusters theme and Intergalactic, and the result is pretty amazing. Accompanying it, he intertwines clips from the Beastie Boys music video alongside scenes from both Ghostbusters and its 1989 sequel, Ghostbusters 2. The first verse, admittedly, takes the brain a moment to properly process and reconcile the dueling sounds that the ears are trying to distinguish between. But by the time the second verse kicks in, it feels like a blissful musical marriage.

Although the classic movie theme is paired with a mega rap hit harkening back to the late ’90s, it feels like a very contemporary update. Particularly in that the original Ghostbusters song is relatively thin with lyrical content, Intergalactic fills it in quite nicely, providing it the meat and backbone fans never knew it was missing. Not to mention the imagery of the Beastie Boys giant robot battling alien monsters is perfectly reminiscent of the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man’s ghostly saunter through midtown Manhattan. The video mashup comes right on time for Halloween, which you can watch in its entirety below.

The long-awaited Ghostbusters sequel, Ghostbusters: Afterlife, was initially set to land in theaters earlier this year, but due to the Coronavirus pandemic, its release schedule has been postponed till 2021. Till then, however, this out-of-this-world remix to the famed theme serves as an excellent and welcome appetizer for fans in need of a ghostbusting fix.
