Catch Ghosts in the Real World With Ghostbusters AR Mobile Game

Unfortunately for the studio, the sequel came out during an especially crowded summer in 1989 - a blockbuster line-up that also included Tim Burton's Batman, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, and Lethal Weapon 2 - so it didn’t match the financial success of the original. Bill Murray’s disappointment with the sequel also meant a third movie never came together, and it wasn’t until 2016 the series was rebooted with Ghostbusters. While the film was intended to jumpstart a new series, it was another financial underperformer, though apparently, the studio is still developing both animated and live-action movies.

In the meantime, longtime fans of the franchise may be pleased to hear about Ghostbusters World (via IGN), a new AR game that will allow them to catch ghosts with their mobiles. The gameplay is said to be similar to Pokemon Go and will be available for Android and iOS devices. In addition to featuring new ghosts created for the game, Ghostbusters World will also feature spirits and ghouls from all corners of the series, including movies, cartoons and comic books.

While Bill Murray was reluctant to sign on for a third Ghostbusters movie, he and most of the original cast signed on for 2009’s Ghostbusters: The Video Game. This title was released for most major consoles at the time, and continued the story from the original movies, with the team having to deal with the return of Gozer to New City. Players took on the role of an unnamed rookie who accompanies the original cast on the new adventure, and while the gameplay could be clunky and frustrating, many fans consider it the unofficial third movie.

The Ghostbusters franchise is ripe for video games, though it remains to be seen how well it will fare as an AR game; a move that could be seen as gimmicky. The box-office disappointment of the 2016 Ghostbusters reboot has also left the movie franchise in limbo, and while movies are being developed, there are still no confirmed release dates or information on them. The animated Ghostbusters movie is said to be told from the perspective of a ghost, but talk of that project has been quiet for awhile.
