Ghostbusters: Afterlife is set to surprise audiences, according to star Sigourney Weaver. After 37 years, the Oscar-nominated talent stepped back into the supernatural world of ghost hunters for the highly anticipated sequel. In 1984, Weaver played cellist Dana Barrett in Ghostbusters, the quirky gang's first ever client. Her character serves an important part in the story after a paranormal encounter in her apartment involving a demonic dog escalates. Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis and Ernie Hudson starred as the ghostbusters, ultimately saving the day.

Regarded as one of the best comedies ever made, Ghostbusters has spawned several spin-offs of the years. In the years following the original film, an animated series called The Real Ghostbusters haunted television before the live-action sequel, Ghostbusters II, was released in 1989. Despite breaking box office records, many found the second installment to be unsatisfying. Even so, the franchise lived on with new merchandise, comic books, and even the award-winning Ghostbusters: The Video Game, which Aykroyd has referred to as Ghostbusters II. In 2016, Paul Feig attempted to reboot the Ghostbusters franchise with an all-star female cast, but it failed to catch on. Two years later, Aykroyd teased that the original remaining ghostbusters would be back with a new film.

Sigourney Weaver recently spoke with EW and shared her enthusiasm about the upcoming flick, teasing that it will surprise audiences. Ghostbusters: Afterlife takes the franchise back to its roots, boasting cameos from Murray, Aykroyd, Hudson, and even the iconic foursome's ghoulish ride Ecto-1. Weaver is also set to reprise her role as Barrett, though her storyline is being kept under wraps. Read what Weaver said about Afterlife below:

“It’s full of heart. It’s very funny. It’s very charming. And it will surprise everybody. It’s just a glorious film.”

Fans will no doubt be thrilled to hear the Hollywood veteran's high praise, especially after the poor reception of the previous incarnation. Weaver also gushed about the film's director Jason Reitman, saying he did an amazing job. It was extra special for the original stars to be under his guidance, as he's the son of the first movie's director, Ivan Reitman.

Critic and fan reactions to early screenings of the Ghostbusters: Afterlife have fallen in line with the glowing sentiments from cast members. Overall, audiences are calling it a love letter to the original movies and family. Brimming with Easter eggs and callbacks to the first film, most viewers have echoed Weaver's statement about the story having a whole lot of heart. If the love fest continues when Ghostbusters: Afterlife finally hits theaters in November, then fans may see the legacy revived for many more years to come.
