The official trailer for Ghostbusters: Afterlife hints that the original Ghostbusters might have had a falling out after the events of Ghostbusters II. The new film, which has been pitched as a direct follow-up to the two original movies, is set to release in theaters in November 2021. Ghostbusters: Afterlife stars Carrie Coon, Mckenna Grace, Finn Wolfhard, and Paul Rudd, with confirmed appearances from original stars Dan Ackroyd, Ernie Hudson, and Bill Murray.

Unlike the original Ghostbusters films, which took place in New York City, Afterlife is set in American Midwest. The story follows Callie (Coon), the daughter of the late Harold Ramis’ Egon Spengler character, and her two children Trevor (Wolfhard) and Phoebe (Grace), who move to a spooky old house in the country left to them by Egon after falling on hard times. The family discovers a number of supernatural disturbances in the area, eventually dusting off the old ghost-busting equipment for a new adventure.

Though the trailer doesn’t reveal too much about the fates of the original Ghostbusters, it does hint that they had a severe breakup. The split is first alluded to by the simple fact that Egon left the others and moved across the country, taking a good bit of his supernatural tech with him. Since the phone line in New York is shown to still be active in the trailer, that means he left while the business was still up and running, pointing to some kind of potential disagreement.

It’s also telling that, despite all the paranormal phenomena seen around Egon’s old midwestern home in the Afterlife trailer, it seems that he never reached out to Ray (Ackroyd) or Venkman (Murray) for help. It’s likely that the ghosts Egon’s grandkids encounter are directly related to the work he was doing in that house - work that, apparently, did not involve his former comrades. But why would the team have split up after Ghostbusters II?

There are many possible reasons. Egon, Venkman, Winston (Hudson) and Ray could have had any number of personal or professional disagreements that drove them apart. Perhaps the team’s work once again fell to public ridicule, causing divisions between the Ghostbusters. Maybe Egon’s experiments exceeded what the rest of the team was comfortable with. Or maybe the Ghostbusters finally failed in one of their heroic missions, leaving them sullen and divided. The real reason won’t become clear until Ghostbusters: Afterlife releases.
