A new clip from the highly-anticipated Ghostbusters: Afterlife reveals the return of the Stay-Puft Marshmallow Man... in miniature form. The latest installment in the beloved paranormal comedy franchise has been a long time coming, especially since it's being positioned as a direct sequel to the original two films from the 80s. Ghostbusters: Afterlife was once slated to premiere in the summer of 2020, but the coronavirus pandemic pushed it back to this year. The film has been dealt multiple 2021 release dates and currently remains scheduled for November 11. Hopefully, this one will stick.
Ghostbusters: Afterlife follows a single mom (Carrie Coon) and her two kids (Finn Wolfhard and McKenna Grace) as they move into their late grandfather's home and slowly discover their family's ties to the Ghostbusters. Strange events force the kids to pick up where their grandpa left off in carrying on the Ghostbusters legacy. Afterlife will see the returns of all original Ghostbusters stars, save for Rick Moranis (potentially) and the late Harold Ramis.
Perhaps hinting at the upcoming arrival of a new trailer, Ghostbusters: Afterlife has unveiled a new teaser that harkens back to the franchise's past while also tying into the future. In the clip, Paul Rudd's Ghostbusters newcomer Mr. Grooberson is out shopping when he discovers some tiny little menaces: Miniature Stay-Puft Marshmallow Men. They seem cute at first, but it doesn't take long for chaos to ensue. Check out the clip down below.
So far, Ghostbusters: Afterlife feels like the franchise installment audiences have been clamoring for for years. Its combination of nostalgic elements and a new generation could hit the sweet spot in terms of moving the property forward while also honoring the past. Returning star Bill Murray recently said Afterlife brings the Ghostbusters franchise back to life, and based on the above clip, it looks like it will do so with its typical humor.
It remains to be seen if this Ghostbusters: Afterlife clip really belongs in the movie, though it would be an amusing example of the weird events that prompt the kids to pick up the proton packs. The Stay-Puft Man is always a welcome connection to the first movie, and this is a funny way to bring him back. Other recent glimpses of the ghosts who will appear in Afterlife also seem to have ties to the 80s films, but hopefully the new installment will also find a way to bring in some original creatures. The nostalgia is fun, but Ghostbusters: Afterlife should also get the chance to carve its own path.
