Ghostbusters: Afterlife director Jason Reitman has revealed that he already has ideas for a sequel. Ghostbusters: Afterlife made its theatrical debut on November 19, 2021, after its release was delayed multiple times due to the covid-19 pandemic. Ghostbusters: Afterlife takes place 32 years after the events of Ghostbusters II and follows a family's discovery of their ties to the original Ghostbusters. The film introduced new cast members Carrie Coon, Finn Wolfhard, Mckenna Grace, and Paul Rudd, in addition to cameos from original cast members Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, Sigourney Weaver, and Annie Potts.

Ghostbusters: Afterlife is the fourth film in the franchise, which was kicked off by the box office hit Ghostbusters in 1984. After the 1989 sequel Ghostbusters II it would be almost 30 years before another Ghostbusters film was made. In 2016 Paul Feige attempted to reboot the Ghostbusters franchise with a female-led film, but the film didn't perform quite high enough for a sequel. Now, Reitman, son of Ivan Reitman who directed the original Ghostbuster films, has revived the franchise once more with Ghostbusters: Afterlife.

In an interview with Uproxx, Reitman revealed that he has some ideas for a Ghostbusters: Afterlife sequel. A sequel for Ghostbusters: Afterlife has not been confirmed yet and its box office journey is just beginning. However, Reitman has now hinted that there might be more to come. He admitted that there are certain plots that didn't happen in Ghostbusters: Afterlife, but such plots could be ideas for a sequel moving forward. Check out his statement below:

I wish I could talk to you about that [Egon deciding to repaint the Ghostbusters II logo on the Ecto-1.]. Well, I’m just saying that’s a plot that is not in this film and we have ideas moving forward.

Reitman's statement was in response to a question about a change of logo in the film. In Ghostbusters II the logo on the Ecto-1 vehicle is a ghost holding up two fingers, differing from the logo in the original Ghostbusters film where the ghost is only holding up one finger. In Ghostbusters: Afterlife, the logo is back to having just one finger up, meaning that there was a moment where Egon changed the logo after Ghostbusters II. According to Reitman, he already plans on answering this question in a potential sequel. So far, Ghostbusters: Afterlife's box office opening exceeded expectations, nabbing $44 million during its opening weekend. Its success will still take a bit more time to gauge, but this strong start, combined with Reitman's confirmation of ideas for Ghostbusters: Afterlife 2, suggests that a sequel could be possible.

A sequel to Ghostbusters: Afterlife could be very exciting, considering that the 2016 reboot didn't quite succeed enough to warrant a sequel. The franchise took an almost 30-year break from the cinema after 1989, raising curiosity for if Ghostbusters: Afterlife will be its true cinematic revival or if it may lay dormant once more. It feels like it could be a true revival considering the huge time gap between Ghostbusters II and Ghostbusters: Afterlife. Such a gap means that there are a ton of potential plot points and occurrences during that 30-year gap that can be explored. Reitman's comments show that he understands Ghostbusters: Afterlife raised questions that can only be answered with a sequel and gives viewers hope that there are plans being made to give the franchise further closure.
