Let me preface this by saying that the following topic may or may not be considered to a Ghostbusters 3 spoiler for some readers and if you are one of those readers then you might just want to back out of this article slowly without reading any further down. You have been sufficiently warned.
Bill Murray is probably one of the best comedic actors of the past 30 years. He’s right up there with Dan Akyroyd, Steve Martin and Eddie Murphy (Beverly Hills Cop Murphy not Pluto Nash Murphy). Most of the comedy films in the 80’s can contribute their success to the fact that Murray was in it. His role of groundskeeper Carl Spackler in Caddyshack is by far the most memorable character from the film and in fact, Murray and his brother have opened a restaurant at the World Golf Village Hall of Fame in St. Augustine, Florida called Caddy Shack.
Murray made Meatballs worth watching, Stripes worth laughing at and beat out Puxatony Phil for top billing in Groundhog’s Day. That’s pretty much what Murray does in every film he is in, out shine the other people in it. Scrooged, Little Shop of Horrors, What About Bob?, Kingpin, Rushmore, The Royal Tenenbaums, The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, Charlie’s Angels, Garfield, Get Smart, City of Ember – the list goes on and on and on. Each of those movies is better for him being a part of it. Heck, some are only watchable because he is in it.
Now I know I left out the most important film, Ghostbusters, but really I was just saving the best for last. Ever since Ghostbusters 2 came out, fans everywhere have been clamoring for a Ghostbusters 3. It’s been a long slow ride to get the film green lit and moving but with the announcement of Ivan Reitman returning to direct and Sigourney Weaver agreeing to return. Speaking of which, Weaver made that oddball, off the cuff statement at a press junket for Avatar back in December where she said she thought Bill Murray was going to be in Ghostbusters 3 as a ghost.
Everyone pretty much laughed it off as the ramblings of a drunk old woman (including the studio) but now comes an interview from the website UK Mail Online with Murray and it appears that she may not have been as drunk as everyone thought. Says Murray [SPOILER TIME]:
“I said to [the people involved with the Ghostbusters 3], 'I'll do it if you kill me off in the first reel.' So now they are going to have me as a ghost in the film.”
This is just a small snippet of the entire interview which you can read HERE, but it’s the only part of the interview about anything Ghostbusters related.
Also, our buds at Cinematical are saying they have it on good authority that:
"...,the central mythology of the sequel was being based on Zoroastrianism, which is one of the earliest religions on record. Like with most religions, the war between good and evil is at its central core, and in terms of evil there's Ahriman: the god of darkness, the eternal destroyer of good, personification and creator of evil, bringer of death and disease."
Up until this point, I hadn't really thought of the main villain but it would make sense that the writers would use a very obscure ancient religion as their source. I can see Murray playing a ghost in the 3rd film. He did, after all, play a great “zombie” in last year’s horror/comedy hit Zombieland. So if he manages to pull off being a ghost in Ghostbusters 3, then all he has to do is play a vampire in a future film and he will have covered all the basic monster types.
We already knew that Ghostbusters 3 was going to be more of a “passing of the torch” between the old crew and the new crew, so does Murray being a ghost bother you? Also, what do you think about the "rumor" news of the possible main villain?
