Dan Aykroyd spilled the beans last week about the overdue Ghostbusters 3 script getting a rewrite. The reaction to Aykroyd's announcement was overall tepid, in part because the actor neglected to say who exactly is doing the rewrite - not to mention, the increasing number of Ghostbusters fans who've stopped listening to Aykroyd's comments about GB3.
It turns out Aykroyd wasn't just making empty promises, though. It's being reported that Etan Cohen has signed on to rework the current Ghostbuster 3 script draft (presumably, the one penned by The Office scribes Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky).
Cohen has become a fairly in-demand writer around Hollywood, following his script contributions to films like Idiocracy, Tropic Thunder, Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa, and Men in Black III (though his draft for MIB3 was significantly reworked by David Koepp). That's to say: Cohen's track record isn't all that stellar when it comes to franchise fare; he seems to do best while playing with his own toys, so to speak.
Therein lies the potential problem with Cohen signing on to rewrite Ghostbusters 3. Eisenberg and Stupnitsky have yet to wow the masses with their film screenwriting (Year One, Bad Teacher), and it's been speculated that the pair were responsible for a subpar GB3 script that failed to win Bill Murray's approval. Hence, Cohen will have to work some real magic, in order to produce a draft that finally wins Murray over - and, builds enough positive buzz to convince fans that this isn't one belated franchise installment that should have just remained dormant (Indiana Jones 4, looking at you).
Murray has recently softened his public stance towards Ghostbuster 3 - and by that, we mean he's indicated that it's a possibility (as opposed to, a bunch of crock). That position isn't bound to inspire confidence from fans who're pretty much ready to abandon all hope for a third Ghostbusters movie that features the original cast in significant capacity (much less a good one). Nonetheless, it does mean that the threequel is still staying afloat (for now).
We'll continue to keep you updated on Ghostbusters 3 as more information is released.
