Director Jason Reitman shares a behind-the-scenes photo for Ghostbusters 2020. Based on the 1984 franchise-starter, the new film will pick up on the original storyline that continued with the 1989 sequel. Reitman’s photo includes cast members Carrie Coon, Finn Wolfhard, and Mckenna Grace, along with Reitman’s father, Ivan Reitman, who directed the first two Ghostbusters films.

The original Ghostbusters stars Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, and Harold Ramis. They portray three purely unique parapsychologists who investigate strange occurrences at Columbia University. Both Sigourney Weaver and Rick Moranis have supporting roles, thus boosting the ‘80s star power in addition to the comedic nature of the film. Produced for approximately $25 to $30 million, Ghostbusters earned over $295 million at the box office. The film also earned two Oscar nominations for Best Original Song and Best Visual Effects. Ghostbusters’ main cast returned for the 1989 sequel, which also became a huge box office hit by earning over $215 million. Both films were written by Aykroyd and the late Ramis. They also feature cinematography by the iconic László Kovács (Easy Rider) and Martin Scorsese collaborator Michael Chapman (Taxi Driver, Raging Bull).

On Twitter, Reitman posted a behind-the-scenes photo for Ghostbusters 2020, thus officially acknowledging the commencement of production. In the colorful image, Grace smiles while holding a production slate, with crew members visible in the background. Cast members Coon and Wolfhard appear center-frame, and also bear ear-to-ear smiles. Ivan Reitman appears on the far left, with his son, Jason, on the opposite side next to an ARRIHead camera. The photo is captioned with “The Family’s All Here #GB20.” Check out Reitman’s Tweet below.

In 2016, Ivan Reitman co-produced a franchise reboot entitled Ghostbusters: Answer the Call. Featuring an all-female main cast including Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones, the film is regarded as a flop given its massive budget at $144 million and $229 million box office take. Sony initially scheduled a sequel, only to scrap the plans. In January 2019, Jason Reitman announced his Ghostbusters movie would stay faithful to the original series with a third franchise installment. On July 12, Reitman teased Ghostbusters 2020 with an image of the Ecto-1 vehicle.

The main Ghostbusters 2020 cast doesn’t scream out comedy, but the addition of Paul Rudd will certainly help. However, Wolfhard’s Stranger Things fanbase will undoubtedly flock to theaters to see the new movie, and Coon brings an extraordinary amount of performative polish to the film. Meanwhile, Grace has already accumulated an impressive resume at only 13 year old, appearing in high-profile productions like Ready Player One, Captain Marvel, Annabelle Comes Home, The Haunting of Hill House, and Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. Ghostbusters 2020 is scheduled for a July 10, 2020 release.
