Sucker Punch's Ghost of Tsushima is getting a "Director's Cut" which will give massive upgrades to the game on both PS4 and PlayStation 5, with visual enhancements and an all-new island expansion. It's been about a year since Ghost of Tsushima released and it has lived fondly in the minds of gamers as a generation-defining PS4 exclusive since, but it looks like Sucker Punch isn't done telling that story quite yet.

Rumblings of a Ghost of Tsushima Director's Cut began relatively recently after the game was rated by the ESRB, signaling it was virtually complete and just needed to be announced. The ratings board listing didn't offer up a ton in terms of fresh details, but it definitely indicated something was coming. Given the massive success of the game, it's no surprise Sucker Punch wants to continue supporting Ghost of Tsushima in substantial ways.

With no prior teasing, Sony dropped a trailer for Ghost of Tsushima Director's Cut today, confirming both its existence and an August 20 release date. The new version of the game will be on both PS4 and PS5, but it seems the former version will be more of a Game of the Year-like edition that assembles a bunch of content, but with no major technical upgrades like the PS5 version. Both versions will have the heavily rumored Ghost of Tsushima Iki Island expansion, which features a new story on an entirely different island within the Tsushima Strait. The PS5 version will have exclusive enhancements such as Japanese lip sync, dynamic 4K resolution targeting 60FPS, haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, and more.

Ghost of Tsushima Director's Cut will also have an upgrade path for PS4 owners. Players who own the base game can upgrade to the PS4 Director's Cut for $9.99 and then an additional $19.99 for the PS5 version, or players can upgrade directly to the PS5 version for $29.99. It's not the most ideal scenario, particularly for those who already paid $60+ for it at launch, but it's not surprising there is some sort of fee given the new expansion pack.

Ghost of Tsushima has sold 6.5 million copies as of early 2021 and this will likely only help boost sales, possibly pushing it over 10 million shortly after the game's first anniversary given there's quite a hunger from PS5 owners for new games. Whether or not Ghost of Tsushima Director's Cut is a bit of a cash grab or actually has a lot of substantial value packed in remains to be seen, but it's hard to imagine many people are going to object to returning to this universe.
