Thanks to a new preview from Marvel Comics, it's just been revealed that the Sorcerer Supreme with the powers of the Ghost Rider will be making a return to the Marvel Universe, ushering in a new "Era of Vengeance". Coming at the end of the summer, Kushala will be getting her own one-shot, and the Spirit Rider will be the only one able to save the soul of the classic and original Ghost Rider Johnny Blaze. Additionally, the new preview promises a brand new chapter for all of Marvel's Ghost Riders going forward.

It makes sense that Blaze's soul would be in jeopardy. Recently, he almost killed the Avengers, and Marvel's recent King in Black event certainly took its toll on the original Ghost Rider. During Knull the Symbiote God's invasion of Earth, Blaze was forced to give up the throne of Hell, returning the right to rule back to the Demon Lord Mephisto. Regardless, it looks as though his soul will somehow become haunted after everything he's been through, and it's going to be up Kushala to save her fellow Ghost Rider from being tormented for all eternity.

Kushala was first introduced in 2016's Doctor Strange and the Sorcerer Supremes #1. In it, her origins were revealed, and she became a Spirit of Vengeance after her family was killed. Wanting to get rid of what she initially saw as a curse, she became an apprentice to the wizard Merlin. However, he was unable to make good on his promise to cure her, and she's since been the Spirit Rider, wielding magic as a Sorcerer Supreme and the supernatural fire of vengeance in equal measure. Here's the solicitation and cover art for the upcoming Spirits of Vengeance: Spirit Rider #1:

Spirits of Vengeance Spirit Rider Sorcerer Supreme Ghost Rider
  • SPIRITS OF VENGEANCE: SPIRIT RIDER #1
  • TABOO & B. EARL (W) • PAUL DAVIDSON (A) • Cover by TAKASHI OKAZAKI
  • SHE’S LIKE NO GHOST RIDER YOU’VE EVER SEEN!
  • SHE IS KUSHALA — A SORCERER SUPREME, A SPIRIT OF VENGEANCE…AND THE SAVIOR OF JOHNNY BLAZE’S SOUL!
  • Blaze has been through a lot lately, from ascending the throne of Hell to nearly murdering his former allies on the Avengers. But his nightmare is far from over. Something — or someone — is haunting him, and only a Ghost Rider with the powers of a Sorcerer Supreme can find out why. The dynamic writing duo of Taboo (of the Black Eyed Peas) and B. Earl expand the Rider mythos with an action-packed special that will kick off a brand-new era of vengeance! Kushala’s about to be the hottest thing in hell.

Kushala certainly looks incredible in the cover art from Takashi Okazaki, and it's pretty cool that the Black Eyed Peas' Taboo will be co-writing the one-shot with B. Earl to flesh out and continue her story. Additionally, the preview seems to indicate that whatever's haunting Johnny Blaze, it may be something related to all of the Spirts of Vengeance, emerging as a new threat not just to Blaze.

In any case, it certainly seems as though this upcoming "Era of Vengeance" is going to be big, beginning with the return of Kushala's Spirit Rider. Having the powers and skills of a Sorcerer Supreme and Ghost Rider is certainly an extremely powerful combo, and it's more than likely that the Spirit Rider is going to be a huge force to be reckoned with when the one-shot issue releases this August.
