Over five years after making his last appearance in the franchise, Gabriel Luna has opened up about why Robbie Reyes' Ghost Rider should make a Marvel Cinematic Universe return. Luna first took up the mantle of the Ghost Rider in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 4, in which he was revealed to have survived a gang attack thanks to Johnny Blaze, who visited him in his Rider form and offered to pass the Spirit of Vengeance on to him. Reyes went on to get revenge against the street gang responsible for his brother's death, while also helping S.H.I.E.L.D. defeat AIDA and eventually taking the Darkhold to another dimension to hide it.

While speaking with ComicBook.com to discuss HBO's The Last of Us, Gabriel Luna shared his thoughts on making a potential MCU return as Robbie Reyes/Ghost Rider. Not only did he express his interesting in making his way back to the fold, but he felt it was important to bring his incarnation of the Spirit of Vengeance back as he felt "there's a lot more to say" and to "show people a Mexican-American hero." See what Luna said below:

You know, I think that the way we left it... I would definitely think that there's a lot more to say. I loved the response. Everyone loved Robbie and they loved the character. And if we only ever did those ten episodes and nothing else, I would feel very complete with what we were able to do. To bring awareness to the character, to show people a Mexican-American hero — the first on television, I believe. I know that's said a lot, but I think people forget about 2016 when we did that with Robbie. But he's a wonderful character and I love him. I'd absolutely be happy to continue. There are so many places you can go because in the comics he became an Avenger, and he's now the All-Rider, which is pretty awesome when you think about it. He's become quite an important piece in Marvel publishing so if he were to appear again, he absolutely deserves it. Whether it's me or not.

Where Ghost Rider Could Appear In The MCU

Interestingly, in the wake of his Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. appearance, plans were in the works for a solo Ghost Rider series centered on Luna's character, which was being developed for Hulu to premiere in 2020. The show would ultimately find itself canceled in late 2019 as the streamer stated they had reached a "creative impasse" with the direction of the show, which also came around the time Marvel Studios was cutting ties with its outside networks in order to produce projects for the soon-to-launch Disney+. Netflix's Marvel shows met a similar fate around the same time, with Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist and The Punisher all being canceled around the same time.

While Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. may have wrapped up, that doesn't mean the door is entirely closed for Reyes' Ghost Rider to make an MCU return. Considering his final appearance saw him take off with the Darkhold to hide it, the evil book's recent appearances in WandaVision and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness have left some MCU fans wondering how Kathryn Hahn's Agatha Harkness came in possession of it prior to Elizabeth Olsen's Scarlet Witch. With how powerful Agatha proved to be in taking out her own coven and nearly taking out Wanda, it would be interesting to learn if she overpowered Reyes' Ghost Rider to take the book, or if she found his Darkhold hiding place because of her magic sensitivity.

With the upcoming WandaVision spinoff, Agatha: Coven of Chaos, seemingly teasing an exploration of Hahn's past and future in the MCU, the question of how she came into possession of the Darkhold could be answered, and subsequently address Reyes' Ghost Rider return. The series could also set up a battle between the two characters, with Reyes tracing her as the last person to possess the book. On another note, the MCU looks to be moving towards building their own version of the Midnight Sons with Mahershala Ali's Blade, Benedict Cumberbatch's Doctor Strange, Oscar Isaac's Moon Knight, Laura Donnelly's Elsa Bloodstone, and Gael García Bernal's Werewolf by Night, leaving the door wide open for Luna's Ghost Rider to continue his brand of justice.
