When the season 6 finale of The Walking Dead wrapped up, it left viewers with the cliffhanger of who met the business end of Lucille - the barbed wire-wrapped baseball bat owned by new villain Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan). But, while fans have scrutinized where cast members headed after The Walking Dead season 6 wrapped in order to figure out who won't be returning AMC's post-apocalyptic zombie drama when season 7 begins, many of the actors have moved on to other projects in their downtime. Norman Reedus, who co-stars in The Walking Dead as crossbow-wielding Daryl Dixon, is returning to AMC for his new travel series, Ride with Norman Reedus.
However, looking to additional future projects, Reedus recently spoke about bringing a comic book character to life from a different fan-favorite story: Ghost Rider.
In an interview with Uproxx about Ride and The Walking Dead, Reedus was asked if he would be willing to bring Ghost Rider to life - that is, if Marvel asked him to audition for the role. The actor acknowledged his appreciate for Nicolas Cage's take on the character in the 2007 film, and said:
“Hell yeah. It would be a blast. Do I get a skull face that’s on fire and all that stuff? F*** yeah. I’m down.”
Of course, Reedus playing Ghost Rider is only a hypothetical possibility at this point. However, a rumor surfaced earlier this year that Marvel TV may be aiming to include Blade, Moon Knight, and Ghost Rider to Netflix as part of their established Defenders universe on the streaming service. The report arrived not too long after Marvel and Netflix officially gave the green light to a spinoff series based on Frank Castle a.k.a. The Punisher, played in Daredevil season 2 by Reedus' former Walking Dead co-star Jon Bernthal.
But, while there may be some weight to the rumors of Marvel developing standalone entries based on Ghost Rider, Blade, and Moon Knight - rumors about the Punisher series circled before it was officially announced - it's unlikely these series will hit the streaming service anytime soon. The next show slated to premiere is Luke Cage, followed by Iron Fist. Then, the stars of these series along with their fellow Netflix heroes will begin filming The Defenders later in 2016, with the second season of Jessica Jones heading into production immediately afterward.
Still, Reedus does have clout with fans, but not only for his part as Daryl on The Walking Dead - though he is a fan-favorite character on AMC's series. The actor earned himself a place in cult film history as Murphy MacManus in Troy Duffy's Boondock Saints; plus, he appeared as Scud in the Guillermo del Toro-directed Blade II, the second and most well-received entry in the trilogy of movies based on the Marvel Comics character. So, perhaps Reedus would be a good fit for the role - that is, if Marvel and Netflix do move forward with a Ghost Rider series.
Daredevil season 1 & 2 and Jessica Jones season 1 are now available on Netflix. Luke Cage season 1 will arrive on September 30th, 2016. Release dates for Jessica Jones season 2, Iron Fist, and The Defenders on Netflix have not yet been announced.
