2021 marks Ghost Recon's 20th anniversary, and to celebrate, Ubisoft has revealed Ghost Recon Frontline, an upcoming free-to-play title that appears to be the tactical shooter franchise's take on the battle royale genre. Players will squad up and drop into a massive  playable area for Frontline's largescale PvP. Not a lot of details have been divulged about the game, but Frontline will feature a class system, of which three are known.

Ghost Recon Frontline doesn't appear to be a straight battle royale in the more generic sense. The game offers lobbies exceeding 100 players, but also looks to blend the battle royale gameplay of something like Warzone with elements from other high-stakes shooters like Escape From Tarkov. Players will enter the map, search for intel and other objectives while fighting opposing players, and attempt to extract with their lives.

It appears that players will team up in squads of three in Ubisoft's free-to-play battle royal. A variety of weapons, attachments, and cosmetics have been revealed, alongside interesting game mechanics like the ability to have tactical cover airdropped into the battlefield. So far, only three classes have been revealed. These will be available during the first closed test, with more planned for the game's unspecified launch date.

Details On Ghost Recon Frontline's Three Classes

Ghost Recon Frontline will have numerous classes to fill its three-person squads

Ghost Recon Frontline's three classes are Assault, Support, and Scout. Ubisoft also frequently mentions contractors, which will likely be the characters that can be customized, but it's unclear what exactly their mechanical relationship to the three classes is. The Assault class is designed to be proficient in close-range combat. The Support class will provide protection for the rest of the squad, and may be the one responsible for calling in the air-lifted structures. Finally, the Scout class is responsible for reconnaissance, and will likely use the proximity scan device seen in the Frontline reveal trailer.

A key marketing point so far for Frontline is the ability to switch contractors even in the midst of a game. It's unclear how this will work, and draws into question the necessity of a class system if players are able to freely swap between them. Combining the class switching with the large map of Drakemoor Island and its many biomes, Ubisoft appears to be aiming for a highly dynamic experience. Some are afraid that Ghost Recon Frontline is the next step on Ubisoft's dilution of the Tom Clancy brand, but judgment will have to wait until more thorough gameplay has been presented.
