Warning! Spoilers ahead for Ghost Reaper Girl chapter 31!

Ghost Reaper Girl just returned from a more than two-month hiatus in an explosive way with the manga's main character Chloe Love assuming her most intense transformation in Hades of all places. Mangaka Akissa Saiké, whose earlier work spawned the anime Rosario+Vampire, released his last full chapter of Ghost Reaper Girl on November 1 with two partial releases the same month. The first only contained new images from the series along with a graph showing the organizational structure of the ghost organization Arkham Bullet and its known members. The second contained a message informing readers about Saiké's failing health and a private letter from Saiké directly. Saiké had originally planned on continuing the story in late December, but, unfortunately, couldn't commit to the date.

Readers were left on quite a cliffhanger in November. The last chapter saw Chloe Love and her feline ghost familiar Noel Ulthar possibly lose their comrade the ghost Kai Iod, who was also Chloe's first familiar. Kai was still alive but had just assumed his true form as the evil Yog of Destruction, a creature that takes quite a bit of influence from horror fiction writer H.P. Lovecraft. Kai not only opened the gates of Hades but even attacked some fellow members from Arkham Bullet. But Chloe refused to believe he was gone, with the chapter ending as she ran desperately after her dear friend.

Now, in chapter 31, Chloehas  just entered Hades and is trying to convince Kai to come back home with her. Even though he still obviously cares for her, Kai ends up refusing her offer, but at least it is for her own benefit.  Of course, Chloe doesn't accept this and orders him as her familiar to possess her. And like Kai himself as the Yog of Destruction, the new form she assumes is quite hellish.

Kai obviously means a lot to Chloe Love. Before meeting him, she was a failing actress with no prospects for a successful future. Even though Kai is actually a fan of her work, the best gift he could possibly give her was when he possessed her, transforming her into a scythe-wielding ghost reaper. Because she could assume such a powerful form, he tries to improve her current state of destitution by introducing her to Arkham Bullet so she can earn money hunting evil ghosts. She not only starts making a great deal of cash for the first time in this role but later becomes an online sensation, earning the name the Ghost Reaper Girl.

This new wonderful life with her devoted friends gives her the attention she always sought as an actress. It also gives Chloe enough strength to turn down a big film offer from the movie agents who once used her, a massive moment of personal growth where she comes to the realization that maybe her original dream wasn't really what she wanted or needed. So, Kai's sudden transformation presents her with a true existential crisis, where she can very well lose someone who is arguably the most important person in her life. She even risks becoming evil herself to keep her from losing him, as possessing Kai in this particular state could apparently consume her.

While an intriguing prospect, the fact that she's assuming a new form is more exciting. Ghost Reaper Girl has already proven to have revolutionized the heroic host trope by making Chloe Love a character who can assume different forms each time another spirit possesses her. She first became the scantily clad scythe-wielding ghost reaper with Kai. Next, she transformed into a nimble and high-jumping cat girl with Noel before turning into a deadly nurse when Nyarlathotep possessed her. What destructive powers Chloe now wields as host of the Yog of Destruction can only be imagined until the next chapter comes out in two weeks. Let's hope that mangaka Akissa Saiké stays in good health, for his sake and the sake of Ghost Reaper Girl fans.
