GetsuFumaDen: Undying Moon made a splash during Nintendo's latest indie game showcase, and it's coming from an unlikely publisher: Konami. Once a major player in the industry that released hit after hit, and home to major franchises like Silent Hill, Metal Gear Solid, and Castlevania, Konami in recent years has largely stepped away from the video game business following the departure of Metal Gear Solid creator Hideo Kojima in 2015.

Given GetsuFumaDen: Undying Moon is coming from the company, and the fact that it is a more than 30-year-old sequel to a Japan-only Konami Famicom game, is fascinating. Konami today is largely known for releasing yearly versions of Pro Evolution Soccer and pachinko machines, so the fact that the company actually has a hand in a new game, and it's a sequel to a largely forgotten NES-era title from Konami's catalog, is pretty interesting.

It certainly helps that GetsuFumaDen: Undying Moon looks impressive in its reveal trailer. After perceived hiccups surrounding the Metal Gear franchise and no new recent entries in beloved series like Silent Hill, Konami could use a win when it comes to the games industry. Here's why GetsuFumaDen: Undying Moon could be Konaimi's big comeback.

GetsuFumaDen: Undying Moon Is A New Take On A Classic Konami Game

GetsuFumaDen Undying Moon Boss Battle

While Konami certainly has a hand in GetsuFumaDen: Undying Moon's development, it is actually being made by indie development team GuruGuru. The new game is described as a roguelite with hack-and-slash elements, and with visuals inspired by traditional Japanese ukiyo-e art. Players take on the role of Getsu Fuma, who must battle a flood of evil spirits that have been unleashed upon the world. It certainly looks to play like a classic-era Konami game, featuring a Castlevania-like structure, weapon-based combat, and massive boss battles.

So far, GetsuFumaDen: Undying Moon looks pretty promising. If it turns out to be a success, it would be a big win for Konami. In more recent years, Konami has seemed content to release a few games like Pro Evolution Soccer but ignore some of its older, beloved properties. Rumors even circulated earlier this year that Konami had shut down its video game division for good, though that ultimately didn't turn out to be the case.

Konami bringing back a classic game from its history in a big way may be a sign that Konami isn't as done with their video game business as many have recently assumed. GetsuFumaDen: Undying Moon's reveal and persistent rumors that a new Silent Hill is in the works just goes to show that Konami may be getting ready for a big comeback.
